Dear Bain OP, Extraordinary. An exemplar to us all on this Sunday evening. I say bully to you and hope you crush your interview tomorrow. I’ve struggled with debilitating depression for my entire life. But today, I’m married, have a fine job, can absolutely wail on the guitar, and am healthy. Overall, life is good. Your post reminds of our need to be a beacon of hope in these dreary times. I’ll take that to heart this thanksgiving week. Go get that job and thank you for the inspiration. Love, Dr. Kearney

Invested all I had in immigration to US via education at 25. Graduated at the end of 2009, at the peak of immigration crisis. Got a job in mid 2010 and shared an apartment with 5 others in NJ. This included a 2 mile hike to the NJ train station at 6 AM every morning as I couldn’t afford a car Now, I own a house and looking to buy another at the beach in addition to supporting my family at my home country. Not bragging, just one in a million example of people making it. My only wish is to help others do it as well

I was a teen mom 😀. This post helps me to take a minute and be grateful.

Immigrated as a child and lived on welfare and in housing projects for most of my childhood. Moved 10 times before high school across three different countries. Fell ill senior year of high school and had surgery 4 days before my SAT. Got into HYPSM against all odds as a low income international student and as the first person from my tiny, redneck town to attend an Ivy League. Struggled throughout college with academics and imposter syndrome but managed to graduate with honors. Worked as a consultant for a while where again I had crippling imposter syndrome. Started my PhD at an M7, still struggling with imposter syndrome, but always grateful for the life I’ve been afforded.

I qualified for 100% need-based scholarship to an ivy. Surpassed my dad’s salary-at-retirement when I was 28. Doing pretty well now, and supporting poverty eradication programs through volunteering my skill set (tech strategy and marketing).

That’s fantastic SM2! Love the giving back aspect, that’s something I’m thinking more and more about.

Lost both of my parents to illness at 15. Became the first person in my family to graduate from college last year. Started at KPMG after graduation and will be starting my masters next fall. Don’t ever let anyone tell you you can’t do something/are not capable. Attitude is everything

Started life in a christian fundamentalist homeschool cult in the Midwest. My dad made ~$50k supporting a family of 8 (and less in the 08 recession). Got a full tuition scholarship to undergrad and have been able to form my own views on politics and religion and begin my own life. I'm currently using my consulting salary to support my sister in doing the same. My big wish for the US would be for free public college education so that people who grew up like me could escape, without having to score high on standardized tests.

I did it guys, just signed the offer!!

Not comp related but a question on references: I’ve only had 2 direct managers, current one is nice but I can’t let him know I’m interviewing. Previous one was a bully and I made clear that I cut contact with him when I left (he later had to contact me for non-essential work related stuff but I declined to talk). I have other references I could use, but want to prep for situation when employers ask “why can’t we talk to your previous manager.” Thanks!

I interviewed for a position remotely 3 weeks ago with the 3 partners of an agency at the same time, and it went well. The CFO then took 30 minutes after the initial hour to talk more and she asked that I reach out to her for more questions as well as to let her know when I have relocated as I told them that I am about to move. After 3 weeks, I sent a follow-up note to the HR contact and no response all last week. Shall I try contacting the CFO directly since she did ask that I do? Thoughts?

M7 infrastructure in Texas. I'm currently paid near bottom of scale in my group. I'm not upset and love my job and my peers. I have an offer for 40% raise to industry job. I prefer my current work though, both from daily work and career path. But 40% raise is a big deal. At what point is the pay raise more important than daily work joy. I'm stressing over this decision. I don't really want to leave.
