0%. Absolutely 0%. I'm IN the industry and IDGAF
Okay, right???
Beg to differ, respected colleagues, but you can’t look at this as advertising aimed at consumers—it’s 100% PR and the primary target is, gold stars for guessing, the media. That’s neither silly or gratuitous, because as we ramp up to the day—and, of course, in the days that follow—said media has a lot of SOV on offer. Do you want both the big morning shows and late nights talking about your $4.6mm/:30 brilliance? You bet your ass you do. And, yes, there’s pretty solid data that you do get more social attention by tooting horn in advance—although the ROI in pure advert terms is dubious. Net-net, esteemed-but-now-that-I-think-about-it-totally-missing-the-point-colleagues, the world isn’t limited to your narrow view of these things. Just like anyone who thinks that it’s just the one day that matters, is seriously missing the boat. Lift head from grindstones, fellow sufferers—there’s a broader world out there.
Good viewpoint. Consider my mind changed!
They don’t. The Planters thing has actually gained public traction though.
Yo RIP MR PEANUT 🙏🙏🙏 he died for our sins
Reasonably close to zero percent - that should be common sense. It's like asking how many non-accountants care about the agenda for the next big accounting conference.
Not exactly rigorous, but I surveyed some of my non-industry acquaintances who are football fans and will definitely watch the Superbowl. Most didn't know that teasers for Superbowl ads were even a thing. And none of them cared or expressed any particular desire to watch them.
If it's good, they care.
People like good advertising. They like to watch and share it.
The RIPeanut thing blew up on Twitter. And not just ad people and brands. Dozens of real, normal people tweeting it in my feed alone
Id be willing to bet something similar is or will happen with the return of the old spice guy.

nada. and why do the trades think i care before they’ve aired?
Don’t be so cynical. The Mr.Peanut thing went viral.
Like a lot of things, when it was novel and unexpected it had some impact (when was Little Darth, like 2010?), but now that it’s entirely expected and everybody does it, theyre as mediocre as any other ad that genpop finds annoying (if they find it at all).
Mr Peanut does seem to have broken through that this year so far, so good for them. And I saw the Doritos Cool Ranch stuff with Sam Elliott and Nas X and actually liked it, so good for them too.
As far as the general public, at this point, in general, nah nobody cares. But then Mr Peanut happens and it seems like teasers can still be a good idea to do. So they wont be going away, I guess is what Im saying.
Biggest circle jerk on earth
0.
RIPeanut went viral because it’s ridiculous and stupid (in a good way), not because anyone cares about the actual ad to come, or mr peanut, or peanuts in general.
Just finished mine.
And even I don’t care about it.
However, my teaser is possibly better than the spot! Ha
I’ve seen a few shares on social (from non adverting friends) of the Sam Elliot dramatically reading Lil Nas X lyrics. They like it, but most ad people would recognize that it’s a ripoff of the Christopher Walken reading Justin Timberlake lyrics from a few Super Bowls back.
