Remember the golden rule, which is to treat others as you wish to be treated.

Be clear in what you're asking for.

Praise publicly, give criticism 1:1

Fly air cover for your people, and don't ever violate trust by throwing someone under a bus

Give people credit for their work, and share positive feedback with the team

Don't play favorites,

Manage different people differently; tailor your approach to personality, experience, etc.

Remember work/life balance and try to manage work flow when possible to allow people to not work crazy hours constantly if it can be avoided through better planning.

Be a player coach, and don't delegate everything.

Resist the urge to do things yourself all the time, even if you know how to do it better. Leverage your resources, and allow people to make mistakes (without giving too much rope).

Mentally note that some of the people reporting to you may be senior to you down the road. Foster talent, surround yourself with good people, and help them shine.

Encourage open communication among the team, and share the big picture so that people don't feel like cogs in a wheel.

I am sure that there are many other great tips, but those are the ones that come to mind!

like

Expect a lot of errors starting up - be very focused on tactical advice to help them through, keep a positive attitude, and stay very focused on catching any errors as they get through the initial hump. Then start gradually expanding responsibilities as they show they can take it on. Folk's very first month is always a little rough - make sure you set aside the time to engage properly, and don't expect massive leverage on day one.

like

Empower your people to get the most out of them. Give them the option to choose what they want to do on projects. We need to get XYZ done, which part do you want to work on? When they choose they take ownership. Encourage them to think for themselves and encourage them to continually improve through constructive and timely feedback.

like

Yeah agree with those tips 100 pc. Just one caveat- they all apply to candidates that are team players and have a good attitude. You may come across the occasional ones that are too big for their boots. That’s when it gets challenging. You’ve got to stay a step ahead of these ones. Counsel them and give them a chance. Segregate them if required to avoid them influencing the rest of the team. If they don’t improve, manage them out. Also don’t forget the importance of managing upwards and the client. Spending disproportionate time on your team can lead to much larger repercussions!

like

Don’t be stingy with the corporate card.

like

Align everything to a single common objective.
Provide your team a big picture overview, followed by all the parts. (Pyramid Principle)
After that, assign the parts and provide the team with:
1. Purpose
2. Method
3. Endstate

Your job is then 2 parts:
1. Provide them everything they need to be successful
2. Shield them from the senior level BS raining down

You'll be alright! 👍🏼

Yup, gotcha. Im a former SAC, I asked because my advice would be different if you were a C2. Take the time to invest in getting them better. First 3-6 months they are going to be negative leverage for you. Don't let that stop you from giving them responsibility and putting them in low risk situations. They are going to 'fall and skid their knees' a lot. Try and remember what it was like when you were new and coach them how you conquered those challenges. Lastly, be open with them. Tell them what you are focused on, your answer first, and guide them. The more it feels like you are "leading them and not managing them" the better.

like

Great advice, M1. Do not allow political bs or toxic behavior to continue if you become aware of it, or it will hurt the team and the engagement.

like

More emphasis on the fact that a new AC1 is negative leverage and that's ok. I would also mention avoiding the idea that an AC1 is a resource vs someone for you to mentor and still involve as a thought partner. Lastly, Is recommend they don't shy away from asking for upward feedback.

Really great advice, everyone. Please keep the suggestions coming! For context (in case this changes your advice or adds nuance), I’m also a pre/MBA here.

If you're pre-MBA who are you supervising exactly? Interns?

Are you a C or an AC/SAC?

Second and third year pre-MBAs (AC2s/SACs) can supervise a first year pre-MBA. I’m one of them

Awesome - thanks. How would your advice be different for a C2?

Hi! I’m a field consultant and I make roughly $200k. I’m tired of the sales aspect of this job and considering pivoting into project management. My question is can I make $200k or close to it in that role? If so is there a particular industry I should focus? Little background I have a MBA and completing my doctorates at the moment. I do have enough transferable skills to make this change but salary is a concern along with culture.
