I'm in a low COL Central Market. Staff 1 48K, staff 2 52K, was just informed of a rating that "exceeds my peers" (EY 10 degrees - no number rating) and was told my raise will be in line with that. I was supposed to start in the NE but transferred here. My starting there would have been 56K and I would have struggled. I just bought a 5 bedroom house and my mortgage is cheaper than my rent was. It's all subjective.
This falls in line with our office in a low cost of living area in the central. I have seen nothing but extremely high salaries posted here so don't get your hopes up if you aren't in a major market
What's rent like in a low COL
Started at 61K in NE - high COL. The normal starting salary is 56K, so I think that's about right for low COL.
That's just how it is in low COL markets. It seems very low compared to the SF and NYC salaries a lot of people on here have. But keep in mind they also have the huge expenses of living in a big city. I live in a low COL market as well and as an S2 I was able to buy a four bedroom house. I used to be in a large market and most of the senior managers there still rented because they couldn't afford to buy. Expect to be around 64k as a S2.
Where in Texas are you guys? I'm in Dallas and I was making $63k as a staff 2 before I left. I know Dallas, Austin, Houston all pay pretty competitively and the COL isn't as low in these cities as everyone thinks either.
Cost of living
Raises look appropriate. 8% year 1, 10% year 2. If you're not top rated then that appears in-line.
I agree, you are insanely low. Something is wrong with EY salaries in the SW region. They are way below the other big 4.
Be careful comparing your salary to other posters. People are vain and like to tell stories in which they're the hero. I'm in Texas market and those salaries are typical.
Also consider housing prices. A new staff in Texas might make $50K compares to $60K in NYC. This might seem like a lot, however, you can likely find housing in Texas for $500 a month whereas you're paying easily $1,000+ in NYC (for a tiny shared apt with room the size of a closet).
What does COL mean?
AA 1 makes my point for me.
Staff 1 in a high COL making 55k. Cost of an okay quality 2 bed 1 bath condo here is about 600k depending on the neighborhood.
Also I'm not aware of any staff in my office being remotely close to affording to buy without help on the down payment
That's like the condo I looked at when I was interning in high COL east coast city - 460 sq ft garden unit (read:basement) studio for $440K. Parking spot an additional 60K.
