Is it a super crazy idea to switching to a Series E Startup?
Background: Been in my current role Salesforce for 3 years and was very successful but now extremely bored and uninterested.
The startup is offering equal TC Salesforcepaper money including), great exposure, growth, learning. The startup seems to be doing well, pretty stable eith good wlb and promising to be public in near future.

I went from 250 to 440 tc last year.
Career is going well
Wow! How?
Just made it into my first Fang company so all in all going well I think! Next step is proving to myself that I can keep up and survive..the imposter syndrome is too real 😄
Sentimental reasons. Microsoft products powered my love for technology growing up and just think it would be like a full circle moment. And obviously I would probably learn a ton and get paid for it.
Progressing faster than most I would say, but I was told if I want a lead position then they'll have to throw me in a lead spot for 6 months to a year before they can promote me. This was in my annual review where I was told I "significantly exceed expectations" which is the highest rating to get.

Going from senior to staff/principal is really hard, and there aren't a ton of management opportunities.
I could see that, I’ve heard you’ve gotta have quite a few years under your belt
Started trying to live by the mantra "I can do hard things". I decided the job I am at will not be improving due to a toxic "bro" type culture. Started interviewing and just got qn offer from Microsoft! Never worked at a FAANG/MAMA company. So excited that I decided to bet on myself.
Great mantra to live by!
Progressing well. Grew a lot fairly quickly over the last few years (startup). Still have a ton more to learn I feel like. Would like to keep moving up the IC (Staff) or management track, but no specific goal for this year. I'm starting a new role soon, think I'll have a ton to learn there, which is exciting. Generally I don't set specific external goals as such for my career, I just focus on what's in my control (working hard, being a good employee, etc) and have a general sense that I'd like to keep progressing. It's worked well for me so far. What about you?
That's an amazing opportunity, definitely soak up all the knowledge you can from the staff eng. That's not an opportunity most have access to, especially at smaller companies.
By the way, I forgot to answer your earlier question about the new role - yep, it's a lateral move title wise, so still Lead Sw Eng, but more opportunities to learn and grow both skill and career wise.

Progressing well. Hope we close on some fresh capital soon, keep growing our revenue, and continue to grow the team.
Yeah, that’s a lot and definitely way out of my scope. Congratulations to you for getting there, at least! Hope you can find a little more time to rest though. If possible, could be another goal for you this year? Find a way to take that nice long vacay!
Feel like I haven't really been able to put my mark on anything yet, which is sort of disheartening
Don’t lose heart, the opportunity could come at any moment!
Honestly, not great. I’m looking to do more work with systems that handle high traffic but I’m stuck on a growth team. Would like to understand more about things like distributed systems through first-hand experience, not sure how I’m going to get there though
I’m starting to look elsewhere, it just feels tough because folks want you to have experience with X in order to work on that team, especially the more senior the role.
I also think there are no guarantees. My current team was going to build my company’s public api when I joined. Then that project got put on the back burner for like a year. So even teams who could be working on cool stuff can have priorities change
Could be better, but I'm sure it could also be worse. I'm definitely not where I'd hoped to be at this point in my career.
Never too late! You could only be one job switch away!
It's going great so far, I want to become a Seniore Software Engineer
Google is huge, congrats to you on that! Think you can get to Senior this year?
I’m progressing pretty well. I’m prepping to make the transition from working for myself full time to moving back to corporate. I have a mentor and a couple of peers who are helping me prep for FAANG interviews atm. I’m hoping to land something in the next few months.
Nice! How was your time working for yourself full time? And what’s bringing you back to the corporate world?
Slower than I would like, so I went back to school in the fall to study CS while working full time which has been going very well! Unfortunately, I am bored out of my mind at my current company and not feeling very challenged by the work. We churn through employees and never hire enough people to get basic tasks done, so promotions or more challenging projects are out of the picture here as well. Looking to find a new opportunity where I have more room to learn and grow, a summer SWE internship would be ideal.
Love seeing stories about people transitioning to SWE roles. I think it’s 100% worth it. Good luck to you and I hope it all works out!
Was progressing well until COVID. Now I just don't care for tech anymore. Got burned bad from previous startups burning me out and haven't quite recovered. Not sure if I will.
Tangential, but how do you like Etsy? I’ve heard their WLB and culture is really good, hoping that might help
