Just had that conversation with my CC. My career, my choice. However, my group lead chimed in with, "Thought you wanted to make manager ..." I'm taking the manager-track role.

Seriously it depends on your goals in life and your skill sets. Just remember many folks in leadership don't have your best interest at heart. Find people who do and follow them to the top. I made manager at deloitte and diversified at Accenture. I am making SM at Accenture this year but could have made it faster and deloitte. Then I would have found myself less marketable. I took a step back to take a step forward and now I'm highly marketable compared to others in my practice, and my career has much better longevity. If getting to the top quickly is all you care about and you don't mind getting stuck with one client - move to the OG and climb the ladder, but keep in mind the risk that bears. The account goes down and you are less marketable externally.

This is a question for the auditors in public accounting firms. Do you know if there’s been any discussions about PA firms pushing back on clients filing deadline because of staffing shortages? Im on the tax side helping a prep and my client said that tax auditors have heard whispers about it and that a mid size firm already came out and told some clients that they will be prioritizing based on the statutory deadlines rather than when they want to file.

Is an MBA worth it? Has anyone without one ever felt passed over for promotion or a position because of it mid-later career? My agency has a benefit of about 5k a year for education and I’m not sure if I should take advantage of it. I feel like the most valuable skills come from on the job experience and I feel like taking classes after work would be a strain.

I’m curious what the opinions are on the process they have seen or used to get promoted. I’ve never had it happen in my career this way but in my mind, your work speaks for itself, you advocate for yourself, ask for a promotion when it’s not been offered. Then you get promoted after you make your case if you do qualify. The way I’ve seen it (& a reason I’m leaving my current company) is where they only promote people when they’ve threatened to leave or received a different offer. Thoughts?

What do you do when small local firms won’t give your resume the time of day, but everyone you ask for resume feedback on says your materials are fine? These aren’t big law or boutiques, we’re talking probably paying $20-30 an hour part time as an associate with firms of 1-3 attorneys generally. I know biglaw is recovering from COVID but has it really hurt small law so badly getting an interview is next to impossible? Any and every practice area. Work is work. Approx. 500k local population size.
