Taking a week vacation. Why do I feel like I need to bring my work computer with me ?

Nobody should take their work computer with them for a week vacation, this work makes us feel we are absolutely necessary and we are not

like

I think that is an expectation which still is incorrect, howeverif you are in a higher position and can’t delegate work for a week then something is very wrong …

like

As an associate you’re probably fine not bringing it.

like

If you died tomorrow they would have your replacement by next week. Remember that next time you feel guilty about taking personal time you’re entitled to

I don’t take my work laptop on vacation as a rule. I’ve actually had managers annoyed I didn’t respond / wasn’t available and guess what, sucks for them. It’s my PTO. That’s their problem not mine

I’m a senior and I did not do this. Make handover notes, have a handover meeting, and tell them you won’t have internet access and “Good luck”. Consulting firms are understaffed right now so they do not want to let you go. Use that to your advantage and disconnect.

like

Don’t be paranoid. They know you are out so don’t respond. I’d you do a good handover they need to figure it out based on your instructions. If you set precedence you respond on vacation you will never have that boundary and they will abuse it.

like

My experience: Work will always need you if you make yourself available I stopped taking my work laptop with me from couple of years and team knows that and they have adjusted; plus no work was ever affected, it gets done either way

like

Because you’re either a workaholic or in a toxic work environment and need to work on setting boundaries?

like

Don’t take it. Delete Outlook and Teams from your phone.

like

You feel like this because they firm trains you to think you're on call 24/7. Leave your laptop at home, and mute all notifications for work apps on your phone.

like

I’m just paranoid about getting those: “hey can you make these quick changes or hop on a quick call to discuss?” emails even while I have an away message.

And you ignore those.

like

Brainwashed.

Yep, agree with others. Don't take your laptop and don't look at emails on your phone. Disconnect so you can recharge.

So looking to go from Full Time to contract. 😬 I built in some time off into my hourly rate, along with health-care and retirement. I was offered three different packages with vacation days. 5, 10, 15 and they had a rate difference of 0, -$1.22/hr, -$2.40/hr respectively. Any thoughts or guidance?

Is a firm allowed to only give you 1 month notice before they change their PTO policy - they went from 6 weeks PTO and carry over allowed to now starting in January it will be unlimited and obviously carry over would be meaningless. People had saved multiple weeks and didn’t take off in 2021 so they could take that extended time off - they are mentioning that “oh it’s discretionary now so you can take all you want” but I feel like we’re getting cheated and they should have to pay us out balance

EY Parental leave question: how many weeks were you actually out? When I took my leave 3 years ago, I counted total of 21 weeks of leave. That’s including one firm winter holiday week.
