Taking PTO vs PTO payout. Which is more beneficial?

Lump sum payouts are withheld at the higher level, ultimately they’re taxed at normal rates. Big difference. But to OPs question, take the money.

For your life: take, for your wallet: payout.

Assuming you are going to leave? You keep your benefits on PTO, so if you are taking time to look for s job or something that would give you more protections. Otherwise it’s a timing issue

I'm doing paid out but it's basically going to pay back a sign bonus

Could someone explain the “withheld at the higher level” thing? You can tell I’m not in audit...

Ive heard PTO payout gets taxed pretty heavily.

Mine would go back to paying off my tuition reimbursement. :(

Keep in mind, lump sum payouts are taxed at 22%.

Reiterating what P1 said - PTO payouts are taxed exactly the same as your regular pay, so don’t let taxes be a factor.

I always take the payout. Usually I give two weeks notice, sit around doing very little and get paid for working for two weeks, and then get my PTO payout. Basically feels like two weeks of free pay pay (not really, I earned it, but that’s what it feels like).

D1 got it right

Do you accrue PTO while being on PTO? If so, Taking PTO would be the best way to max out how much money you get

you mean tax bruh

I am starting with a new company in 1.5 weeks. I am due roughly a week after I start and they know. Issue is I don’t want to give notice to my current company in case the baby is early and I won’t be covered under new plan yet and they have right to let me go earlier than my new start date. Is it ok to quit the day I start new company? Or should I tell my boss earlier and hope he won’t ask me to leave sooner? I will be on PTO next week anyway.

Is it a bad sign if a recruiter looked at your profile on LinkedIn but you haven’t heard back yet? For context, applied to Amazon last Thursday, noticed the recruiter checked my profile this Tuesday. Could it be the short holiday week meant they weren’t working? Or is it a sign they won’t be reaching out?

How do you feel about public holiday gatherings? I felt like such a crummy mother for not taking my kids out to see a parade or fireworks yesterday. But then with the tragedy in Illinois and (on a much smaller scale) the number of local fires because of fireworks (which are banned in my town, btw), I feel so much safer having my kids at home.
