Talk to me about au pairs. What was your experience? How much did it cost? What service did you use to find one? I have a baby and a toddler and they go to a great small daycare but we are moving and I am considering hiring an au pair instead of hunting for a daycare that I am comfortable with.

I use cultural care. It costs whatever the rate sheet says it costs but relatively inexpensive provided you have a spare bedroom for the au pair to live in (frankly if you’re in a HCOL city this is worth about 3x the $ outlay). It’s a personal experience- but you interview the au pair before hiring and imho you simply don’t even interview a teen. That said, it’s freaking hard right now given visa restrictions - so the supply is limited. My first au pair is now - 6 years later - my EA. I’ve had great experiences and average experiences but not bad experiences. I think part of it depends on where you are- speaking very generally- if you’re in the US and in NY, SF, or LA you’re more likely to have your pick of the best au pairs, vs if you’re in a less “exciting” location. City vs suburbs makes a difference.

Following- also interested in this! Contemplating the switch as from what I can find it appears relatively similar in cost and far more convenient

Read up--most au pairs cannot do housework by contract. They likely need their own room. Some are teenagers that are stroppy, homesick, irresponsible. They will need car insurance and perhaps a car. You still need to pay a babysitter for weekend date nights. And it's a very personal experience.

My brother and I were raised by au pairs and we both turned out fine! Our parents owned their own business and worked 2-11 PM M-F and 9-5 Saturday. My parents used Au Pair Care. It was hit or miss with some of them. They definitely need their own room and work limited hours, I would suggest giving them a car to use for kids and personal use as well (we always did). If possible I would wait until your toddler talks so if there are any issues they can let you know. We stopped using au pairs around 2007 so I can’t speak to cost. However, if my parents needed them beyond allotted hours on occasion then they would pay them extra. My parents would also have them drop my brother and I off at their business Friday evening and Saturday afternoons so that the au pair was free Friday and Saturday nights. Since they were off Friday and Saturday nights, my parents were cool if they did babysitting gigs to make side cash (usually my cousins and friends). Once I start having kids I’m def doing the au pair route!

Thank you!!!! My toddler is extremely verbal. That’s one of the reasons I know the daycare he goes to is great. I wish we could just bring the daycare with us ☺️

Do it- it’s life (sanity) saving. My husband and I thought about this for about a year, and now we look at each other and laugh- why did it take us so long?

Cultural care

Hope to learn more if you bought an apt in Manhattan, or if you decided against it (renting/moving to upstate/Long Island/Jersey). My husband and I are considering to have a baby soon and are thinking of buying and living in Manhattan for the next 10 years or so (looking at property under $2M). Please share what you considered as you were making the decision - I hate throwing away rent but also don’t want to trap ourselves in significant financial obligations. Thanks!

I feel like my kids 1st grade teacher is being too strict, but I'm not sure if this is normal or I'm being sensitive because it's my child. E.g. she gave him 2/10 for his math homework because he doodled on the page, colored in the circle that has the page number, didn't draw the word problem neatly, wrote his last name under the name line, and says some of his numbers aren't legible. All his answers were correct, except one where he forgot to fill in the blank. Is this normal? X-posting

Lots of post about kids so I’ll offer one that’s been on my mind. Why more than one kid? I grew up with a sibling. She is my best best friend but as I’ve gotten older realized we were more of the exception. Lucky that we are same gender (which I do think impacts closeness), that we are close in age, and just clicked like bffs. Have since met so many sibs with non existent and toxic relationships. More kids = more expense. After passing on genes and getting love of a child, why have more than one

Anyone ever had trouble with a doctor not wanting to certify a family member’s condition, in order to take a leave of absence? My brother attempted suicide via drug OD (he was addicted) and he’s been hospitalized for over a week with seizures, psychosis, peeing blood, etc. We have visited him every day, driving 100+ miles round trip. Our nanny takes my 7 month old out for one, sometimes 2, long walks every day (weather permitting). Love the idea of fresh air every day but its often for several hours at a time and he always returns home crying bc she's pushed him to his limit between feedings. She brushes it off saying hes just fussy which kind of irks me. Im also concerned that he's spending too much time strapped in a stroller. Is it reasonable to ask her to take shorter walks? Am I overreacting?

Currently in consulting. Have always liked Organizational Change Management, but have also been interested in Project Management. Between an Associate PM at a F50 company and an OCM Consultant at a boutique, which would you pick? Same city. PM pay is a little higher but workload will likely be more and culture will be more cut-throat. I was thinking I can probably get into PM later if consulting did not work out, and this hopefully won't be my last time getting an offer from a big firm.

Does this mean they already selected a candidate and I'm wasting my time? Or does it mean they have enough candidate selection for the final round to where if I have an offer, I'm less able to negotiate since the company has a lot of back up candidates. First time leaving consulting so all of this is new to me.
