It's pretty hard to move from Fed to Com once you're in Fed... Why not try to get into the Commercial practice in the first place?
Is there a lot of commercial in the DC area. Looking to stay here. Unfortunately I have no connections in Deloitte's commercial sectors.
I am I federal and I really like it
@D5 what level and what's your pay range? I have heard federal doesn't pay well compared to commercial.
First year bta. 72.5k with 10k signing
Switch to the commercial side I mean. I'm just fed up with my current firm and want to get out.
Agreed. As a commercial consultant who's also had experience on federal projects, definitely try to go commercial from the start
There's a commercial office in DC, don't know much about DC area projects tho
There's commercial work in DC/Baltimore. I don't know why people are saying it's hard to switch between commercial and federal... it really isn't. But if you know you want to be commercial try to start there - def agree on that.
^pay is okay and projects are interesting? What kind of work do you do?
Commercial office is in McLean. I'm in Federal and I'm being paid pretty well and have been on fun fast paced jobs. That being said, I would like to travel and try an industry of interest and plan to switch to commercial. Doing commercial projects are as easy as networking, but officially switching is basically the same as reinterviewing
Deloitte Federal projects are lame, mostly Finance and HR IT systems. I had more fun in commercial because of variety and lack of drama. Now I do international commercial work for BAH (I know right?).
@D5, and that's because of the whole Deloitte is broken into separate legal entities thing right?
I work on federal health-related projects. I really like everyone in my sector and we work on very relevant, fulfilling things (I'm in s&o). I'm sure not everyone has had my experience
@D5 no it isn't; not if you network well
Federal pays less - campus hires come in around $75k and it goes up from there
And D3, I will be rolling onto a commercial project soon. It is as easy as networking your way on. However, for an official move, you need commercial PPD backing and for your federal SL leader to sign off. The exception is if you are moving elsewhere
I have talked to many SM/PPDs in commercial and several have said that they sometimes find it easier to just interview the person in rather than to go through the official process
@d5 right so it's not like reinterviewing at all. Just need two people to agree.
