Tax folks in industry, how do you keep your knowledge current? Is there any conference, group, community or events that are specifically designed for industry tax folks? I don’t currently feel I have a lot of support as I’m the only tax person in the company. I would like to know what I need to look for, deadlines for in-company tax compliance, and keep being updated on forever changing tax laws. Help🥺

Tax Executive Institute (TEI) has chapters all over the country and run conferences offering CPE and are a good way of networking with peers.

Agree with this

Daily RIA Checkpoint emails with updates for all jurisdictions, subscribe to your favorite big 4 tax webcasts/emails (Deloitte, PwC, EY), keep in touch with friends at your ex-Big 4 and ask them to send you any major updates, and keep up with the news in general for tax legislation. Don’t feel like I’m missing anything.

Love this idea ! 🙏 thank you

Im still in B4, not corporate - but you should sign up for the webcasts the firms put out. If you google “EY Tax Webcasts” you should see a link.

There is/was a conference for industry tax folks. Not sure if it’s still going on.

Just do your CPEs, pester your outside advisors to share articles, and subscribe to a research tool.

Tom cruise went to the conference in the movie "The Firm". Watch it, ong they are taking about 704(b) and basis limitations.

My professional life at the moment is far from ideal. I’ve been on quarantine (long story, but a good one) for the last seven years. Royalties from my books don’t pay the bills. My entrepreneurial pursuits remain hampered. For the interim, I’ve been looking for a remote opportunity where I can leverage my skills in marketing, sales, social media, and elsewhere for a decent sum. I have a social media presence which, in recent years, reached millions. There has to be something exciting I can do.

Thinking of switching employers. Do you think bigger retail stores (the ones that have several locations) are easier or harder to work at than little hole-in-the-wall grocery stores (which is all I've ever done)? It seems like the larger chain stores would have more downtime, but I'm wondering if anyone could give some input.

What would you do?

I was recently promoted to be a senior and I’m on this project with an acting senior and associates. The acting senior would tell everyone, including me, what to do everyday before I get the chance to. I feel like he is stepping into my boundaries. I feel uncomfortable being told by him what I have to do when I know it myself. I feel like he’s my senior instead lol.

Am I being oversensitive about this as a new senior? Or how would you address this?
