For 30 years I have demanded respect. I mean I don’t look past anything. I will shut the lesson down and make it a teachable moment about respect or integrity, etc. I’ve learned if you don’t have control how are they going to learn? The kids seem to know I mean business because they realize that being defiant in my class isn’t going to work. I’m the type of teacher who also shows up to their games, dance competitions, and other events, so they know I care.
I spend A LOT of time building relationships. When the student knows you care, you can move mountains.
I call home with ‘good news’ and get the parents on my side. This has helped me and I know it has made a difference in my ‘hard to teach’ kiddos. They always return the following year to visit.
I also find their strengths and try to motivate them to look to the future.
I would also suggest watching the ‘Marva Collins Story’. I found it on YouTube. Ms.Marva had a passion for teaching and changed the lives of her students. I cry every time I watch this film. This movie gives me inspiration and reminds me that teaching is a calling. We definitely can be the person that changes the trajectory of a life!
Reinforcing positive behavior can help to increase the likelihood of that behavior occurring again in the future. Praising the student for complying with instructions can be a powerful motivator.
It's not easy, but relationships are everything at this age. If they like you, they naturally want to get along with you and others in the classroom.
I’m a love and logic teacher. Most of the time, kids are used to battles. I don’t argue with fifth graders. I tel them I can’t make them do whatever it is they are refusing to do. It’s their choice. They can do it now or they can do it later. The consequences are theirs. We have systems built in place that mean they will miss out on our marketplace for missing work and notes go home every Friday letting families know what’s missing and not missing. Those systems are the consequences. The systems are set from day one and they aren’t ever a surprise. This means that arguments can be avoided because the consequences are clear and enforceable. I will NEVER argue with a kid.
Then, later, when things are a little more chill I conduct a “reading interview”. I do these occasionally to check in with their reading, have them read to me and actually just talk. I’ve noticed that the 3-5 minutes just chatting with them softens my own heart and theirs and gives a fresh start. I’ll ask questions about what they read at home Which leads to conversations about things outside of school. We need to know them beyond academics and compliance. These little meetings are priceless for that.
Students are more likely to comply with requests when they feel respected and valued by their teacher. Building a positive relationship with the student can help to foster trust and mutual respect.
Offering the student a choice between two acceptable options can give them a sense of control and help them feel more invested in the outcome.
Unfortunately discipling problem students in front of their peers helps other students fall in line. I try not to be harsh but take away one of their privileges to show only polite behavior warrants these privileges like free time.
Clearly stating expectations and consequences can help to reduce confusion and increase accountability. The consequences for noncompliance should be fair and consistent.
In some cases, it may be helpful to involve parents, school counselors, or other professionals in addressing the student's defiance. These individuals can offer additional support and resources.
Creating a strong routine in the class helps students know what to do so they are focused and expectations of what they should do are clear
Try to stay calm and remember you are in control of the situation. If you go down to their level then it will only make the situation worse
I pull the student to the side to have a one on one with them. I am a strong believer that when students act out it is for a reason.
From my experience I find that positive reinforcement is the most effective method. Instead of spending too much time on students misbehaving, I give students rewards for doing the right thing
Isolating them from other students for a while. A time out or just being my helper for the day to keep them focused on something
You have to be consistent with rules. If you do something with on student you have to do it with the others and don't let anything get past you. The minute you do they will take advantage
