Not safe there. Crime rampant. COL and taxes out of control. Police being attacked and defunded. Insane politics perpetuating the above. Head to Florida or Tx. Safe and $ goes far and COL is in line with pay. My 2 cents! Good Luck!!
I agree, NYC back in the 1990s things were rough but now you can get caught in the line of fire by those shooting at police. Go where living is easy and your dollars have more worth. Best of luck to you.
Are you thinking of NYC? A lot of nice communities and counties in the state to live in where you could live comfortably with what you have until you secure a job.
Best to you! I grew up in upstate New York so can’t really speak to cost of living in New York City but I’m sure others here will be glad to offer advice, take care❤️
My niece went to Columbia for her masters several years ago and lived in a glorified closet near campus. It was 3X my mortgage in the Midwest at the time. I don’t think it’s gotten less expensive.
I’m originally from New York City it depends on how you plan to live and if you have a job lined up. I know usual apartments are about 1500 and as far as jobs if you can only find a minimum paying job they pay I think $16 an hour now I could be wrong. But if you have a job lined up you should be OK as long as you don’t live above your needs
Haha Manhattan is really expensive but if you go to like certain parts of it like upper Manhattan closer to Bronx you could probably get some thing But better off to stay in like Brooklyn and Queens and in my previous message I even said about living in New Jersey and commuting
I grew up in "Southern" NY, essentially the NY/NJ border. City and Westchester= high pay + even higher cost of living. I can't speak for Long Island, Staten Island, or Queens. I worked in the Bronx for 1.5 years and that is very area specific. Some great areas and good schools, others not so much. Prices followed suit. Same in Brooklyn.
I grew up in Rockland County and it's great. Close enough to the city but still very suburban. High pay and cost of living varies greatly. Orange County is great too, but a bit further away. Since not a suburb of NYC, starting salary for teachers is less but still good schools and great areas to live, with about an 1 hour- 1 hour 15 mins commute.
Are you thinking upstate, city or Island? They are all very different COL. I will say that for the most part, with some exceptions, New England is much more expensive than central, southern, and western US. Before anyone comes for me, please remember I said WITH SOME EXCEPTIONS!!!
NY is crazy expensive. I would imagine that the rent in an apartment would be at least double what you are currently paying.
Rising Star

I think more than ever, we need a “pay vs cost of living” list longer than this https://beforeteaching.com/index.php/blog/
I’ll take the India a district where the starting pay is $412K 🤣 (obviously I’m aware that’s a typo)
I would recommend living in Jersey City and taking the Path light rail into Manhattan. ...a 20 -30 minute commute.
NY is awesome. I wouldn’t move here without a job. If you’re looking for a teaching job, look on the NYS OLAS site.
Upstate NY? Sure. Anywhere within committing distance of the city, notsomuch.

Don't move to NY. You have the kind of money that when invested properly, you wouldn't need to work anymore. imo.
