Does big data bother anyone else? What are you doing to protect yourself, while still being present in the social sphere to stay aware in society and keep connections?
I’m not like a hidden criminal trying to hide from the government or anything haha.
I’m just overwhelmed and scared about how much data companies know about me, and how much I don’t know about. Basically it’s about control, and I feel like I have none of it. I want control back, but at this point I feel like I have to go live in the jungle to achieve that ☹️
I’m not being facetious, but genuinely curious, what are you biggest concerns?
I am. I’m seriously considering getting off all media except LinkedIn. And I’ve done tons of damage! I’ve argued with my political opponents, and I fear that their leader will purge me. I’m not kidding. I realize now that eventually a fascist will gain control of this info and kill all who criticize them.
Also, your insurance company now knows how much you drink and what you eat, and will charge you thusly. And eventually someone will use 23 and Me data to enslave a whole race of people because they’re genetically inferior.
It feels like this would be very challenging to do. It’s not just social media - it’s your amazon purchases, any app you use to travel, etc. Your Netflix and other subscriptions. Your phone that’s tracks you in locations. Social media seems but one part of it. Maybe get a flip phone and unsubscribe from everything for a period of time?
CL1, totally agree, but that’s not going to happen precisely because so much of what we do online is, frankly, mundane. So, it’s part of our DNA at this point. We can’t live without it.
I honestly am scared. If we had a government we trusted (impossible), we could have guidelines.
