We started around 18 months at the advice of our pediatrician. She mostly just sucked on the toothbrush but really loves brushing her teeth now. It’s not really about the kid learning proper brush technique, it’s more about starting the habit and building comfort with the action of brushing (which is understandable kind of weird and potentially uncomfortable). We just have her brush for as long as she wants and really praise good technique. Then, we take over once she gives up to actually give her teeth a good clean. We got Tom’s non-fluoride toothpaste since her multivitamin already had fluoride (although now a year later the dentist recommended we switch to a fluoride toothpaste). You use an extremely small amount - about the size of a grain of rice. We also bought her a Sesame Street toothbrush which she LOVED and thought was so cool.
We started at one after his first dentist appointment. Same with BCG1, it wasn’t so much about cleaning teeth at that point but it helped build a habit. He’s almost 2 now and knows “teeth!” before bedtime.
We started at 12mo - mostly playing with the toothbrush while sitting in the bath. We bought toddler toothpaste but I don’t think he likes the flavor so we may be trying another one once we finish this one up. He loves watching us use an electric toothbrush so my try a kids version when he gets older.
Start when first tooth erupts. Same info as above.
Same - 15 months after pediatrician recommended (non-fluoride toothpaste) and then to fluoride at the 18-19 month appt. Helped that our baby follows us to the bathroom and watches us get ready in the morning. When she got her own toothbrush it was almost a “FINALLY” kind of reaction, because she wants anything that we have. Took about 6-8 weeks before she stopped sucking on it like a lollipop and actually brushing like mommy and daddy
