This is a bizarre question. You’re asking for a blanket statement about a huge chunk of LA. No section of a city that is so huge is ever going to be uniformly one way or another. Be more specific and maybe someone will have input
East Hollywood has turned into an on fire trash can. Los Feliz, silverlake and echo park are nicer.
East L.A. is the name of a neighborhood.
If you mean more the eastern part of the city, there's lots of sweet spots.
Hollywood proper isn't the nicest in general but there are great sections.
Los Feliz is pretty nice and has cool stuff.
Silver Lake is nice too but cooler.
Then you get to northeast L.A. (now referred to as NELA). Echo Park, Highland Park, Eagle Rock, Atwater Village, Frogtown. They each have nice parts and each have cool stuff to offer, especially Echo Park and Highland Park, in my opinion.
For a more family friendly vibe there is Glendale and Pasadena.
All that said, these spots can be considered way out of the way, especially by westsiders. But the westside just isn't as cool as it thinks it is, not anymore.
L.A. County is huge though, to be honest I don't know much about the eastern part that is more in the middle or towards the southern part of the county.

Glendale, Highland Park, Pasadena, Claremont are cute areas with nice downtown spots. I dunno about anywhere else though.

I live in East LA and can tell you where to go, if that’s the case.
East Hollywood has changed a lot over the years. It’s still has its parts that you shouldn’t go to, but overall ok to be during the day.
The great thing is that East Hollywood is right next to Silverlake, Los Feliz, Atwater Village and Echo Park. These are all safe, walkable, cute, hip/trendy neighborhoods 24/7. Hope this helps.

If it’s the part of East Hollywood around Virgil village (i.e., Courage Bagels, Sqirl, Melody, Vinovore) I think it’s safe enough to sublet for a week! Outside if that one corridor I probably would look for something else. I lived on the Silverlake side but would walk to Melody all the time and didn’t have issues. Just don’t walk around past dark.

Yep, I lived in Silverlake for years and would have stayed longer if I could afford buying a house there! It’s expensive though so ended up buying in Mt Washington. Also love my new neighborhood and Highland Park.
Lol I’m an LA native and these dweebs are wrong. East LA is functionally as safe as Venice or Santa Monica. I promise you will be safe everywhere.
