Tell me you're a female employee at your company without telling me you're a female employee at your company

I was the highest revenue earner at the company, had highest client scores, and was always called a “culture leader” because peers loved me too - but watched multiple men be given opportunities I was never even aware existed or given opportunities to pursue - like creation of new roles even that were just handed to people (men). Gave feedback to our leadership, they made empty promises, so I finally gave my notice, and THEN they offered me a position on the executive team. I obviously declined and they were shocked, asked why - I said I felt like the role would just be a way to silence other women in the organization (a fake display of equality in the workplace without any real change). I would have been the first female exec there. SO GLAD I left!!

Me: “Some of the qualitative feedback of our brand study reveals that some of our female shop owners stopped their relationship with our sales reps because, and I quote, ‘He kept referring to me as Little Lady,’ and ‘He burst out laughing when I told him I was the owner.’”

President: “Oh. Well— don’t you think they’re just being sensitive…?”

Me: “If that is their account, then no. We may also need to consider adding sensitivity training to our sales school program.”

President: “Eehh, I don’t know. How much does something like that cost…?”

‘You’re too direct’ 😑

Get this: before I was 'too direct,' I was told I 'need to be more succinct.'

There's no winning.

“Hey can you sit in on this pitch presentation?” despite doing 0 work on the pitch. Then looking around the room when the client got there and realizing why I was asked to join.

Been there. I actually had someone say “hey guys it’s not a good look to just have men in the room, so she should join us.”

I said “You’re right, it’s not a good look. But the reason I should join is because I run your strategy team.” 🙄

Being told that promotions are about company recognition and that recognition doesn’t always need to be in the form of money.

I’m grateful from the moment I wake up in the morning but I also know when I deserve something and earned it. That VP needs to be quiet.

My direct reports/team: empathetic, helps bring out the best in the team, gives us a lot of autonomy but also supportive

I work on a sanitary pad brand. We were working to launch a new type of pads and the client sent samples to the working team. I told the team (largely men) to wear them and walk around for a few hours so they'd understand how it feels, or at the very least open it up and feel it, look at it, touch it. They all thought I was joking and just laughed. When I said I wasn't, they nervously chuckled and quickly changed the topic.
The first round of ideas that were presented were so cringe-worthy and just all round terrible.

Being talked over in a meeting, and/or, having a male colleague repeat the idea I just said, but he gets credit for it. Though I did have a male co-worker call another male coworker out for doing it once. It was sooo satisfying.

Duct tape 😉 I found that if I continue on, as if they weren’t interrupting—and without stopping like they expect—they eventually concede and let me finish. They don’t ever seem to get what just happened, though 🤷‍♀️

Not sure what to do on the second one other than yelling “EXCUSE ME SIR that was my idea!”

The other CD was a coke addict and lost the agency’s coolest and most notable account. I got let go before him.

like

That’s horrible and crazy. I’m sorry 💙💚💛🧡

I get talked over constantly in meetings. And at some point the man sitting next to me says the same thing I’ve been saying all along, like it’s his idea, and all the boys (yes, I’m calling them boys ) goes nuts saying how brilliant he is. And the guy next to me takes credit, for it, knowing all along it was my idea. This happens about 90% of the time in meetings.

This happens to me constantly. Soooo infuriating!

This thread…I…I don’t even have words.

I have so many of my own experiences too. A reoccurring one I keep experiencing is asking the men in my office to refer to myself and other female colleagues as “women” instead of “girls.” Never once been met with a “yeah sure.”

I want this thread turned into a Slack spot. Or a LinkedIn spot. Indeed? I dk SOMETHING.

Keep saying it.
I'm blunt, "I didn't know child labour was legal. What girl?"

My award-winning all-female team of 10 years ago are all still at the same level at different companies and still winning awards. Every man who surrounded us but contributed nothing were all promoted year after year and are all making 7 figures. They were “leadership material.”

Sadly. In most agencies.
Leadership potential = white male from the “right” background/university/social class.
