Texas: when are your firms forcing you back into the office?

Hilarious phrasing. What year are you?

TL1 sounds like we are doing the same things. The weekly get together a are a necessary evil, IMHO, but are way more of a beating than they are helpful. We are at a size where we invite the staff to participate too, and I think the weekly meeting is probably most helpful to them. I agree that our first years especially have the biggest challenge getting up the curve. I feel like it is a lot more work to schedule and try to teach and collaborate on the phone or by Zoom. One of the strategies I have employed to try to make communication as seamless as possible is to encourage my teammates to just call me if they want to talk. Don’t email to schedule a time. Just call. We’re all in for some growing pains as we see daylight.

Hasn’t made any indication we are going back anytime soon. Dallas V50.

Not big law. But big 4 accounting-sept 6 is the earliest and it will be some sort of flex after that

Beginning of May.

I accepted my Amazon offer on 5/23 via email as told by the recruiter who also took down my social via telephone and send me a old school pdf to fill out for a my background screening. At the time we decided on 6/13 as the start date. On 6/3 I received an email from Amazon’s version of docusign to sign my offer, and yesterday 6/8 I was notified by the recruiter that my start date would be delayed to 6/20 due to background not being completed. Any idea what is going on.

My gf and I are having a big discussion and I would love to get your thoughts on this. It’s about how much we keep in touch and communicate when I’m on the road. She needs to hear from me everyday multiple times and if I don’t answer her texts within a few hours, she can get quite controlling (text over and over again, also on my work phone, asks what I am doing and gets upset). I am not used to that and have the trust if she doesn’t text back, that it’s for good reasons, busy at work…. (Ctd)

I have viewed some properties each with two different Realtors in toronto canada. I havent signed any agreement that i will purchase the house through any of both realtors. I dont want to go with one of them realtor now. Will other realtor sue me for any money as they have shown me some listings and spent some time on my case?

My own investments are 7.5L in roughly 1.5 working years at ZS as an associate. I'm 23. Is this enough or I need to invest more?
I've also spent 3-4L on things like an iPhone, many big purchases at home as well.

Any tips on how to achieve and maintain a professional but friendly tone in your emails? Any advice would be very much appreciated.

People dictating emails that they otherwise could just send themselves. Honestly wtf is this? It takes less time to just write something. It often doesn’t even feel like a didactic method, just a way to hide under more junior associates. There is a senior who does this constantly, over the phone, and it’s just ducking intolerable. Even with emails directed at them, I get a call that then tells me to respond and write back X. It can be such an insufferable thing that just kills time.

Able to join a firm at their Californian office - thoughts on which office?
a. LA - Century City
b. LA - Downtown
c. Orange County
d. San Diego
e. San Francisco
f. Silicon Valley

Is it appropriate to approach a junior you were impressive with on the other side of a deal to see if they’d like to join? We’re hiring and it would be moving from like a v50 to v5. If so, how do you do it, just give them a call post-deal?

We should do a day where everyone posts as their law firm rather than as their position.

When should a stub start getting worried about not having much work and low billable hours?
I’ve asked for work but no luck. I know they say this is normal for a stub but when should I start getting worried and consider looking for exit options? Fyi, I like my practice group, so I don’t want to change to a different group within my firm, hence would have to lateral, if I have to. Also, other co-1st years are churning in high hours.

If you do billable work on a given PTO/vacation day, do you still count that day as vacation? Or do you get that vacation day "back"? Or do you only get the part that you billed "back"? (Or some other option.)

Finding that deal work and ADHD are a tough mix. Really struggling to keep up with all the components, characters and documents. Enjoy drafting corporate docs and opinions. In a recession, which associates are the first to get laid off? Recent laterals? Juniors? Midlevels?

How do partners judge laterals that took a class cut? Do you assess them against their class peers or against their years of experience? (Say the person had a LLM or a foreign law degree so they actually have 5 years of experience but are getting billed out as a 3rd year)

What exactly is tech transactions? What would a day in the life of an associate look like?

I see a posting on a big law firm’s website. Best to apply directly? Or use a recruiter?

For the last four weeks or so of WFH I’ve been making it to my desk around 7:30/8am and working basically without a break—lunch at desk- but cannot maintain momentum past like 6:30/7:30pm. Most of the day is billable work, but I cannot bring myself to finish outstanding assignments after 8pm, but then feel so guilty when I’m not working past that time. Am I burnout or fucked up? (Also I hate this gig & am not in it for the long haul, just hate not turning things quickly)
