Managing Student Loans - a Q&A

Thanks for doing this Paul! I'm pretty interested in data on this. Do some states have teachers w/ more student loans than others? Is there a gender gap?

Great question! California, Texas, New York, and Florida account for more than 20% of all U.S. student debt. In terms of debt per borrower, there is a wide range, with Connecticut students (with the highest average) graduating with more than double the debt of Utah students (with the lowest average).

Gender is also a huge issue: women account for 56% of the student population but hold almost two-thirds of total student debt. Women are not only more likely to take on debt but also have an average debt amount $2,700 greater than men on average. This is both driven by the gender pay gap (less savings to pay for grad school, for example) and exacerbated by the gap afterward (slower repayment rate).
