Your theory implies that the reason the ad industry lacks diversity is that the low level employees are mean, rather than any corporate or economic or recruiting policies by the companies themselves. I find this unlikely .
No. In my industry, diversifying the industry and making it more open to more people is a major issue at virtually every union shop. Many of us have gotten rules and resources in our contracts to promote diversity. So in my experience the opposite of what you’re saying is true. Unions are a tool that can be used to fight for whatever is important to you .
Thank you for replying. If unions are a tool used to fight for whatever is important to existing workers, then hasn’t the existing ad industry proved, after all this time with little to no improvement (and backsliding in others), that diversity isn’t a real priority at all? How can diversity possibly get better in a hothouse environment-type industry like ours where who’s allowed in and to participate will tighten even further with a union?
