The bar exam is harder than the CPA exam(s). Don’t @ me and go pass your tests.

Both CPA and attorney. I think the difficulty of exam is one thing. I think overall bar exam is harder than CPA exams. But what makes bar exam more stressful is how the exam is conducted. Bar exam is twice every year and one need to review all subjects all at once. For CPA exam, if planned well, it could be less tensive. Also for law background (at least for me), I don't need to study much for BEC and FAR. The other two subjects are the harder ones...

yeah - that was me all crammed into 2 1/2 days with a boatload of other people - all paper and pencil

I didn’t even realize this was a controversial take. I have CPA/JD/bar passage and the bar exam was obviously much more work - and harder as a whole. Law school is three years of prep (obviously it could be cut down a bit but still, it’s three years of content that’s generally covered on the bar), then only those who graduate law school (in nearly all states) can even take the bar..then everyone studies all day, every day for like four months after three years of law school to take it. Also in my state, you need to know more than 20 practice areas for the bar...secured transactions to criminal procedure to family law to civil procedure... and our passage rate is definitely not 80%.

Agree! CA bar passage is nowhere close to 80%. Actually, July bar hardly hits 50% in recent years. NY bar saw a 84% passage this year in the first online testing. But I think this number is an outliner, as the NY bar passing rate were 60% ish in past couple of years.

Bar has like an 80% pass rate and is one test

likefunny

Some states have 80% passing rate?!! I took the CA bar in 2018 July and the passing rate is lower than 50%. 2018 feb one’s passing rate is even sadder, like less than 30%! California’s bar passing rate is constantly below 50%, and the Feb can go easily as low as 27%. With California’s data, I cannot agree that bar exam is any easier To pass than CPA.

In my experience the reason you are a lawyer at big 4 in tax is because you’re too stupid to work at a big law firm.

likefunnysmart

Outside of a top 14 law school, big law is pretty much impossible to get. I’m sure they have race issues like anywhere else as well, but their biggest thing is prestige whoring

KPMG is top 5. Don’t @ me and join a real big 4.

I’m an attorney and honestly the bar exam wasn’t that hard.

Anyone whose both a cpa & attorney want to chime in? Have heard the cpa is much harder to pass cuz there are multiple sections and difficult to juggle with a FT job. I’m an attorney and honestly just guessed on the exam. Passed my first try.

CPA is harder. Passed all first go around

Wow and this contradicts the hundreds of posts I’ve seen claiming the opposite

If there’s anything I’m gathering from this thread it’s that we accountants have big chips on our shoulders.

likefunny

Not comparable. You can work in accounting without a CPA, but you CANNOT practice law without passing the bar. Hence why law students literally treat studying for the bar like a job from May to July. The stakes are much higher. Hence a higher pass rate.

WI is a somewhat rural state with few jobs for lawyers. MA, CA, DC, NY, TX, NJ, MA do not have this kind of easy process for being licensed- in fact it’s designed to by the opposite. Anywhere there are plentiful legal jobs it is challenging to pass the bar in general.

Well last time I checked there weren’t 3-year CPA schools that required you to pay hundreds of thousands in addition to huge opportunity costs to prepare you for the CPA exam.

Law school at MOST should be just 1 year. 3 years is just a cash grab. Law isn’t even a grad program in Europe

like

I'm an attorney. Two bar exams taken. Passed both with about 100 hours of study time each time. Don't know if it's any easier, but I don't know anybody who has passed all 4 parts of the CPA exam with such little study time.

CFA I-III is the hardest don’t @ me

CFA level 1 is not that hard. CPA harder. Level 2 and 3 though, that takes the cake

The credited response is that they are apples and oranges and it frankly doesn’t matter which is harder.

What’s the point of this?

Anyone who racks up 200k plus of student loan debt to make 70k as a staff lawyer is dumb in my book. The smart ones get their undergrad get some extra hours and grind through the CPA test to make about the same with MAYBE 50k in student loan debt 😎

I am a lawyer. I do know how much lawyers make and know it varies greatly by what kind of law you do. If you want to be a district attorney for instance, you do that because you love the work and not for the money, because the pay is terrible. If you go into Big Law, you are probably doing it for the money rather than love of work. Big 4 law probably falls in the middle, where you’d expect to make decent money. And lawyers in Big 4 don’t get starting offers of $70k, unless you are in a LCOL area. I’d expect more like $90-100k to start in a HCOL.

The OLD cpa was hard. The current CPA is easier based on timing. Additionally the quality of people taking the bar is higher than the average cpa person which would impact failure rates

Exactly @D1. My same thoughts.
