Discuss pay at work! That “rule” is BS that keeps underpaid people from benchmarking themselves and asking for more or quitting. Skip the manners, get some facts, document your findings and get a raise (or get out of there!)
Discuss pay at work. When was your last raise? What did you do that deserves a raise? Maybe ask what the difference between the work of the colleague and your work is, that justifies the pay gap.
In case they are still not willing to pay you according to the work you do, you should consider moving to another company where your workforce is valued.
Nothing will change when you don’t demand things
I agree, of course it’s about getting paid fairly. Therefore the question what justifies the pay gap. Better to ask for it than immediately assuming that the wages are unfair. Maybe there is a reason that we don’t know yet. And thus be prepared with arguments against these reasons that justify your work is the same and deserves the same pay
Leave. You can’t change the culture and you should work somewhere you are valued.
I agree. Be loud. If it were me, I’d secure another offer for leverage in that discussion and also as a backup for job security but I wouldn’t let it slide. Even if you end up quitting, that is still a very clear message.
When your general company culture is to not discuss pay at work 🚩🚩. Any company that pays well/fairly wouldn’t hide it. If anything that would be a selling point.
We need to normalize discussing pay at work. Not talking about this more is only helping the employer, no one else. If the company can justify paying you differently than your peers, then they shouldn't have a problem with employees speaking openly about their pay.
I would start interviewing and leave.
I agree you should discuss pay at work. A huge reason that women are underpaid is because they don’t ask for more money or promotion, in the same way men do.(societal roles) Find out what your counterparts make and then evaluate the facts to determine appropriate pay level. I work in a male dominated industry, and I am also higher paid than the other men in my office at the same level, who have more experience. I work extremely hard, and have always felt that I should be compensated appropriately. I explain why I deserve to be treated differently and then I ask for it.
Ask for a comp review. A man would.
This is the most appropriate, non inflammatory answer and the only actionable one that allows you to have this convo now, without offers on standby and your things packed by the door - IMHO
Feel free to discuss pay. But it might also be a good idea to start looking for a company that pays you what you deserve. From experience, the boys club is something that won’t go away anytime soon. Unfortunately, I think it’s something that is still common in some workplaces, especially if they all hang/talk outside of working hours.
However, I was really lucky at one of my first office jobs and became friends with the guys group. They weren’t trying to be exclusive. They were just friends from college, so naturally they were already friends. I’ve also experienced workplaces with toxic “boys clubs” though.
Good luck! I’m sure it’ll all work out. Just remember your worth and don’t settle for anything less! 💪
I work in a male dominated field and I’m not going to tell you how many times I’ve seen women get less money for equal work. I use the resources like you found and get my money right. Do not be afraid especially in this economy where jobs are everywhere
How can you figure out what the males get paid? I’ve tried discussing pay with my counter parts but.. they don’t tell me 😬
Pay, can be a sensitive subject. How did you bring it up to them? Asking directly may not have the best results as it can feel confrontational. Have you tried bringing up salaries outside your company to see their reaction? It allows you the opportunity to gage their pay level, based on their response. You could try using Robert half as an average basis or glass door or fish bowl. At a happy hour, after a couple rounds you might bring up the change in market and how surprising it is to see what a X (a lower ranking position) is getting paid to leave or being paid in the market. Then, rate their level of shock or lack there of and dig deeper. (Once had a persona tell me wow, they should go to a lower role so they can get paid more)
Not only do I agree with everything stated above, but there’s also the component of diversity and equity. What is your company doing to resolve that long-term? If positioned from a DEI lens, they clearly have some work to do if there are no females in management positions or higher. My industry is largely skewed towards men, but my company is over 60% female. These things are equally as important as your current pay. How are they developing and promoting diverse talent? Just things to think about! Best of luck.
If you can’t change the culture, I wouldn’t drown myself helping a company or department like that succeed.
Go find someone that had your job before you and ask them! Collect data and treat yourself like you are a business!
