The company I work for uses location agnostic compensation strategy. Former HQ office is located in Arlington but we are all remote now. Cost of living varies greatly depending on geographic area, however, it's not taken into account with this approach. Just wanted to get a sense if this is a common trend for software companies these days. Thanks in advance.

It's becoming more common, hence the exodus from areas like California. To be fair, companies leaving the state started before COVID even existed. It only makes sense that the employees follow.

Thanks for your reply.

Yeah. You're not alone. We gave in and moved.

Yes, this is happening all over. I live in FL and a lot of my friends from Cali have been moving to the east coast for this exct reason.

Thanks

This is the standard-issue these days. I moved because of this problem as well.

Thanks

I'm seeing this pop up a lot more, and I think it's what things are moving towards as people choose to go fully remote. Can't decide whether I'm for it or against it.

like

Thanks

I think FB accounts for your location and so do some other startup companies on the East Coast.

Thanks. Yeah, looks like some companies do, some don't.

Hi friends, Got two offers. One with: Humana(Remote)[Insurance based company]and another with Mastercard(Hybrid) (Ofallon, MO)-need to relocate after 6 months. Both are for Senior software Engineer. Humana- TC= 155K, Mastercard-TC=175. Which is a better option, as talk are going on that, recession will happen soon. I’m confused to choose, as some say Insurance company doesn’t get effected with recession. Please suggest.

No idea about team/culture/stability differences yet.

The non-work factors I'm debating are:
1. Cost-of-living (housing!). Could probably afford a nice ~$1.25M SFH in Seattle suburbs sooner than a fair $1.5-2M near Cupertino.
2. Public School quality. Unsure private will be affordable.
3. Weather/region: activities

What’s up with this trend of hiring managers rejecting developers who don’t have FAANG experience on their resume? People in consulting companies also work for clients who handle high traffic and complex architectures. Also, not everyone wants to work at FAANG companies due to moral issues that these big tech companies ignore and blatantly misuse personal data and privacy.

like

This may be an unpopular opinion.

But I think it's kinda shitty that when FAANG people get laid off, everyone feels bad for them and they get so many resources to get rehired, but the same is not true for people that get laid off at smaller lesser known organizations.

Like those FAANG people will be fine, they got generous severance packages. The people who actually need help often get overlooked or are forgotten.

All, this is my first post and I just want to share that I passed the first Amazon interview for Technical Program Manager and am heading to on-site virtual interviews! Hypothetical: If you are new to a job and working part time on a startup and your team was accepted into Y Combinator, would you quit your job so you could go full time for the three months?
