I have great WLB, I think you have to know what you want and know how to get it. A big difference from big 4 is we don't measure utilization or how much extracurricular crap you're doing, so I think the culture is a lot less stressful than places where utilization matters. We also have shorter projects than big 4, at least from my experience (never been on a project longer than 5 mos, usually 3-4).
Our FS practice is the most developed, but cover the full spectrum to varying degrees. Travel is very client dependent, but 3-4 days a week is fairly standard unless staffed in home city. Culture is very good -- I think so, but this is consistently remarked on externally (Glass door, Vault, etc.). Any specific questions?
Any reason why there's so much negative feedback on glass door? Also, is it true? Most negative feedback revolves around no work life balance (worse than big 4 it seems) And headless management

It is hard for me to diagnose where that comes from. There were a few big projects last year that had notable WLB issues. So I'm sure that's some of it. The reality is that we aren't as big as the Big 4, so as we've grown, there have been times when we just don't have enough people and that leads to WLB issues that are hard to fix. That said, I think these issues are more acute than systemic. One individual that has a 5 month project with terrible hours and total tenure of one year is going to think its systemic though. Not sure what headless management means, so hard to respond to that one.
OW here - we have a very open culture about WLB, but the nature of some of the FS & strategy cases just makes long hours inevitable. Definitely very challenging.
What about the case interview process? Any pointers for that? Got a call from OW recently and they might call me in soon for a case interview.
You get reviewed at the end of each project and then all the reviews get cumulated for the year end review. So the only thing that really matters is doing a good job on projects.
Thx OW2. How do you get promo? Do you get reviewed on non-client work? Does helping with recruiting etc count for nothing?
There are a set of defined expectations of each consultant level along a variety of dimensions. As OW2 mentioned, you're evaluated against those on each project and then at year end.
Promotions are based on the year end review. If you are performing at the level above your current level, you get promoted. Reviews for non-project work vary -- if it is a "real" project with deliverables etc, then yes. If it is helping a Partner for a few days, not likely, though doing poorly or very well in these contexts are certainly recognized. Firm contribution is measured separately -- there's a minimum expectation and exceeding that yields recognition though not typically a promotion.
