This is true, i moved from Chicago to NYC in 2017. Was making 100k in Chicago, had the exact same rent and living situation as you when I was there. Lived in downtown no car 1bd single. Got to nyc, had to live with roommates first 6 months, 100k didn't allow me to live by myself in Manhattan.

like

I started living by myself when making 115k in Manhattan - in an elevator doorman building steps to Central Park. Contrary to M1 I think you can live by yourself in Manhattan at 100k, especially if you have no debt. Landlords look for income being 40x rent so you could get a place costing up to 2500. Def can get a studio or BR at that price even pre covid

like

You can get by on less, it depends how much you save/invest. Also 1 bed apartment can vary greatly in NYC in terms of size, quality, amenities. Hard to deduce what your quality is there.

C1 depends on a lot of factors but I’ve mostly seen window units, yes. Most walk ups, brownstones, etc all have window units. I currently have central as well.

Where do you live now?

Chicago

Expect to pay around $3k for a 1br (can fund for a little less, or more, obviously), food will most likely be more expensive if you dine out. Even groceries are a tiny bit more expensive.

Very true. Which low cost city do you live in

Chicago

You can very much preserve your lifestyle even at a 105k salary here. Confirming this as a single someone who was making very close to that a few years ago and has a similar lifestyle (and whose COL hasn’t changed since). Once your rent is figured out, the rest of it is easy to manage at six figures here — my 1-bedroom in Midtown is $2,100 for instance.

Hello fishes ! About to be offered a position at Deloitte London as SC. Exp : ~9. Visa sponsorship is needed. I foresee a possible negotiation on compensation from Deloitte. Not sure of the estimate yet but I understand it would be 55-60k as per other fishes . Should I settle for a lower comp while employer pays one time sponsorship & migration costs or bear the migration costs self and chase a good salary . Which is better ? Note : moving to UK with spouse and kid

Help me ask for a raise in my upcoming performance review? In sum, my company’s HQ is in Texas and I feel I’m being paid a Texas wage when I live in Los Angeles (the role is remote). We do have a San Francisco office and I want to ask my boss to match me what staff are making there. As that’s more comparable. Based off of Glassdoor, my salary matches Texas’s exactly and SF has the same role at 10k more. Should I show him the Glassdoor page? Don’t want to come off too strong. Please advise
