Take your PTO and don’t think twice about it. Schedule it in advance whenever you want. They’ll deal with it just like they would if you got a last minute deal on any other given day. They’ll survive. You gain nothing by giving in to that culture. Clearly you’re not getting paid more for more work, and do you really want to be promoted higher up in this group? I would want to exit ASAP to something reasonable. Now’s the time. It’s an employee market out there. Quietly speak to a recruiter, send out your resume, etc. Get a better team and don’t look back.

You're an analyst in finance? I'd try to pivot or job hop to a better company. This is one kind of toxic environment I'd be 0% OK with and would take a paycut if necessary to leave. That way you'll get the pto payout you deserve 😜

I feel your pain. I don’t fit into my team/company culture either because I never drank the kool-aid, which is basically “put the company first in your life above all else” lol. It’s wild - I feel like the designated driver with a bunch of drunk people, thinking “how does no one else see what I’m seeing here?” Smh

It has been well established that our team is grossly understaffed. They have been looking to hire new analysts on the team for months but so far, have not been able to bring anyone on to help with the workload. I know that when I request time off, I’m looked as as “not being a team player” and my team members get frustrated because they have to absorb my work. While we are not commission based, the amount of business that we close is supposed to directly correlate to our year end bonus; however, at the analyst level, this impact is pretty immaterial and bonus seem to be allocated more so on seniority. I’m the only female on the team. I feel like this kind of hyper-competitive culture where my male coworkers pride themselves on their lack of work life balance is why women don’t want to work in my segment of the business, and makes me question if I can realistically stay in my current line of work. For example, when the time comes for me to start my family, I’m not going to have the option (that my male coworkers have) of returning back to work immediately. Don’t know if I really have a question, but any advice or perspective on the situation is appreciated. TIA

WOW - I thought I was the only woman in this situation. So good to hear you raising this conversation. Do companies think about how sustainable long hours, high expectations, and lack of work life balance is? Maybe not because leaderships is not well represented with a diverse and supportive team. The new trend is DEI, but I've heard this topic so many years ago and nothing has changed. Companies praise diversity, equity, and inclusion. However, there is lack of inclusion and understanding. Long hours don't equal pay, working women struggle, and even worse now with the pandemic. How can leaders be accountable for DEI?

That is a toxic environment and in no way do I see any benefits in you staying. Cisco us actually an amazing company when it comes to work life balance and taking our PTO whenever we need to. Go out on stress leave, take time to get your mental and physical health right.

Leave.

Remind these hyper-competitive people that PTO is part of your work compensation and they are screwing themselves by not taking it.

likefunny

Take your time off and set your boundaries and your priorities. If you want to leave then do a plan of pros and cons to justify your decision. Is it just your team or the company? In my case the company is a good place to work but there are leaders who lack understanding. If your company gives you PTO use it and your priority is your wellness.

Sounds like IB or something similar. Unfortunately one is at a higher risk of finding themselves in a culture like this in the field; however, it’s def not like this everywhere. What’s holding you back from leaving to find a firm with a better culture?

like

Culture is def different based on the company. I’m doing financial analysis as well and I’ve had companies that have good work-life balance and have more structured work. I’ve also had companies that will work me for 70-80hr work weeks. Trust your gut and leave for a better company, just need to ask the right questions at the interview to gauge the culture and work life balance

Every team, every company, every industry is different. Your expectations do not mesh with those of your current work environment. That does not mean the team is “toxic”. For some reason people love to throw around that term. Your team just has different expectations. You should respect them and look for something that fits you better.

like

I did not say it’s how I am prepared to work, but if people desire that type of environment, it’s not up to us slander it. In some professions, it works. In others, not.

Take the time off you want and then probably a good idea to leave at some point. So many people lose their pto, including me (and I’m not a martyr who prays to the alter of busy, to me it’s like the opposite of bragging). Im actually going to ask about getting compensated for vacation days not taken due to workload and not having coverage options. I think it’s become too pervasive in Corp America and we’re missing out on perfectly good money cash.

like

Quick side question- what do you mean 6-7 person team? 60-70 I'd get that you put it as a range, but why not just say whether its 6 or 7?

Update…requested to take time off a month ago. My request was ignored. There seemed to be a break in the work and looked like it would be a good time to take off so I deduced to book travel and accommodations. New deal came in last minute and was dropped on my lap. Have killed myself the last two weeks to try and get everything in a good place on the deal, but will miss the presentation (which I would of had a small role in). Trying to put it aside to enjoy my time off, but I have so many things going on that I was supposed to wrap up before I left and now will have to probably work 1/2 of my time off anyways. It’s been really upsetting that all my hard work during the year is now going to be overshadowed by this and that my whole team is pissed at me. Will probably start looking for new positions but don’t feel like it will really be any different anywhere else. Also trying to hold on a few more months in the hopes of a sizable bonus that I am definitely owed, but know that taking time off while everyone’s swamped is probably going to cut into that.

When my attention is taken for a second, someone does something like this. Gluing things to counters. I don't know how much longer I can do this.
