Already been there

Dealing with same at my firm (I’m fixed income partner so these things fall above my pay grade!). Fired two managers for cause, lost three seniors to industry positions. We’re definitely looking to hire from outside and (hopefully) at a premium. Meanwhile we’re selling work left and right. If we don’t solve this I’ll be “senioring” my engagements with experienced staff. And I do high level M&A tax compliance and consulting in the PE operating space. Hello charge hours. Yay.

like

Charge hour goal not met because no one would give them work due to severe performance issues. And they didn’t proactively seek new work. Save the pity party for someone who deserves it.

Welcome to public accounting. You look for better opportunities and leave, especially if you feel like you aren’t being valued. Market is hot right now and there are a lot of companies that will pay a premium to hire you.

like

The public accounting talent pool is dwindling. It is an employee market. Start searching now. If you are waiting for a bonus, negotiate the same amount for a signing bonus. BDO has more issues than staff turnover, including but not limited to, poor technical infrastructure, wage disparity based on gender and lack of people of color/females in management positions.

I had this crazy idea that would never fly, but would totally institute if I ran my own shop: Pick up salaries and wages as a fixed cost. If I have 20 people making $100K each, that's $2M in total expense. If 5 people leave, then the $2M is split between the remaining 15 people as a bonus. It's not like I'm charging clients any less so my topline revenue stays the same. This model ensures that my people are being rewarded for having to work harder, but I would still save money because I'm no longer on the hook for non-cash compensation (health insurance premiums and such) for the people who left.

like

That's why the staff would know exactly why they are getting upsized bonuses.

Ask them how many people they hired in India with the savings.

I had the same experience. Fortunately I was the first to go with a layoff with a generous severance package. Would stay til 12 then have to get their early for wire transfers to go out happened over and over. I was salaried so no extra pay or time off. Pray for a layoff and severance package

Can somebody please explain to me why MBB and other top consulting firms are so adamant that you have an MBA? I majored in accounting, finance, and operations management at a top 10 undergrad business school and then got my masters in information systems from the grad school program. I took multiple MBA courses as electives when getting my masters and it seemed like those classes were very basic and easy. Idk if I would learn anything in an MBA program that I hadn’t already learned in undergrad
