Are you relatively junior? Thoughtful questions are a form of speaking up. You don’t need to only provide solutions.
Be aware of upcoming deadlines, matter needs, etc and ask thoughtful, well-prepared questions. Eventually you should be proposing solutions too but this would be a start.

This is helpful, thank you! I’m a mid level, but new to the practice area.

Speaking up and being shot down is better than not speaking up at all. The latter shows that you are engaged. Also just because you are shot down doesn’t mean what you said had no value - probably someone else senior to you just had a different perspective, and that’s ok. I’m learning this too to be honest - my partner told me recently that I should try and say something on every client call that I am on. I’ve realized that not everyone that speaks up in meetings sounds smart, or 100% prepared, and that it’s better to speak up and appear engaged than not say anything at all for fear of sounding stupid.

I’m a 6th year. Definitely spent too many years not speaking up on calls 🤷🏻♀️

Don’t feel bad. Is there any aspect of the current matters on that you know really well? Just speak about what you’re currently working on. Most lawyers with under 10 years of experience BS how much they know.

My main contribution in meetings is making sure all action items get covered. If given time to think about something I can usually come up with an answer. I falter where someone will hand me a slide deck or something and want real time feedback on it instead of giving me time to mull.
In case it applies to you, I've found that sometimes it's helpful to speak up early in a meeting (which may feel counterintuitive). It gives the impression that you're participating/in charge but lets others build off you so you don't need to have the super insightful comment when it feels like everything's already been said.

Thanks, this has been my strategy this week and so far so good!
If I was your supervisor and learned that you have nothing to contribute, I’d really have to question why we’re paying you.
Absolutely. Huuuge industry wide problem.
