You’ve either forgotten or you were one of the few that instantly pick it up. You probably just forgot how much hand holding you needed.
Every week I feel like I see the same comment. First years are just salaried interns, and tbh their growth is very dependent on senior help and coaching. Everyone feels like they are the worst ever each year, but I can guarantee you were the same as we all were fresh out of college with no direction in the world.
We had a few interns this year that were significantly better than the first year associates
Guess what, I’m a first year and all seniors I met repetitively asked me to send them a draft before sending out emails or keep pinging me serval times a day to see if I’m doing okay or if I have questions. So I guess all my seniors are “BAD” as your first year?
Lol how about take the time and train them. I’m an A2 and have been doing my best to pass down the tips and tricks and other random things to A1s. I walk them through my process of trying to figure things out and regarding emails, at some point I just told them that they didn’t need to go through me and just send it.
This seems to be the standard response as if people haven’t been coaching them daily since they started. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect them to handle basic tasks like updating a PBC status after 6 months on the same client.

What's an example of something they could have figured out in 30 seconds of looking themselves?

If that's literally what happened and there is no other relevant context, then I can understand your frustration.
nothing wrong with asking for an email proofread IMO
I agree. I’d rather spend 30 seconds proofreading an email than dealing with an issue when a client email is sent out being incorrect, unclear, etc.
Rather than putting a first year down (I.e. even past interns were better than this first year) try to coach and have patience. Encourage a growth mindset for yourself and for the first year. People can get better and improve over time with the right coaching and motivation. I think this is a critical aspect of being a team player

It's just the nature of many accountants to pretend like they are still in school trying to compete for the highest GPA. So they don't want to assist in any way--it's like they are treating their jobs as some kind of pop quiz and they "cover their papers" so nobody can cheat off their answers. The reality is that it really doesn't work that way. However, the partners like having healthy population of seniors like this b/c it helps drive the associate turnover they desire.
Within reason, absolutely.
I believe that you’d feel differently if this was in person. Pings and zoom calls definitely are more time consuming and you’d probably wouldn’t even realize how many questions are being asked if it was in person
Ok that’s fine we will just leave so you have even more work ❤️ xoxo
I walk my staff through it on a zoom call. A simple email doesn’t cut it.
