The vast majority of Supreme Court cases are decided like 9-0 or 8-1. It’s only on a small number of issues (the ones the tend to get the most media coverage) that the justices are split.
For 5-4 & 6-3 votes you also need to look at who writes the majority opinion. If the CJ is in the majority, he gets to choose who writes, so he can tailor the holding pretty tightly if he wants. Otherwise opinion writing is based on seniority with a right of refusal.

I’d argue it’s the person sitting in the Oval Office next year, since that person will choose RBG’s successor

No, I'm presuming he would replace one Liberal (RBG) with another, leaving Justice Roberts as the swing vote we currently have.
While both “sides” of the court can vote in blocs, they’re pretty independent thinkers IMO.
While some of the most publicly controversial decisions are 5-4, I think something like 60-90% of decisions are unanimous depending on the term, which is still pretty incredible given the court's wide ideological diversity and the challenging / unprecedented nature of many of the cases they take

There's no single swing vote. Gorsuch has an ideology that sometimes leads him to side with the liberals. The other conservatives do too, occasionally.
Though arguable more conservative, kennedy has leaned liberally on certain core issues including on same sex marriage.
