I just received two in house offers as a senior lit associate. I applied a bunch as a fifth year and got no hits. Do you manage big cases yourself? Direct strategy, communicate directly with outside counsel, make decisions or recommendations on your own? In my opinion that’s what really matters, and I was able to stress my experience in doing that. Do you work on a particular type of litigation? If so make sure you’re targeting those companies. If you’re a generalist (like I am) you need to target big companies who are likely to see all types of lit because that’s where you can add value. Both offers I received were for large companies that have a variety of disputes. I didn’t make it far in companies who wanted specialists or who did very discrete things.
have you asked for feedback? it may be informative
I have, and I haven’t gotten any responses.
It’s just a competitive process. Hang in. You’re getting interviews and will get stronger as you do more and eventually something that is a good fit will stick. I looked for a year and (finally!) just gave notice.
Practice area and firm matters. Employment litigation at a V10 will open many doors. Mass torts at a V80 will open less.
