The manager in on my engagement has a bad reputation for treating staffs badly. I found out that many staffs felt uncomfortable with the manager’s style of communication as well as always blaming on staffs instead of taking responsibility. For example, a staff sent out the sample selections and manager reviewed it but later found out that there was an error but instead of taking responsibility, the manager blamed the senior who had nothing to do with the selection process.

I’m contemplating whether I should ask Resource Management not to put me on the same job with that manager again. Any suggestion?

Why would it be the manager’s responsibility for the staff sending incorrect samples? At our firm, the senior is supposed to review these before sending them to the client. I would recommend asking the manager if they wanted to review deliverables/samples prior to sending it to the client. Also, those responsibilities should be discussed during the planning meetings. I’d recommend defining expectations during those meetings.

I did read it. It would make sense for the manager to be upset if the senior was supposed to review them, but didn’t. Then the staff sent incorrect samples. I don’t review samples before they are sent, because it is the senior’s job to review them. Each firm is different, but I’m simply providing perspective.

@SM - we are short staff’d and manager wants to get the selections out ASAP. The manager probably forgot that he was the one who reviewed it and gave me a lecture about how we can not miss thing even if a staff missed it. I was gonna tell him that he reviewed but didn’t want to embarrass him in front of the partner so, I swallowed my tongue. In the hindsight, I should have coz he has no problem rigging me in front of the partner

Agreed. If he/mgr reviewed it ahead of time, then definitely push back. If the partner is on the email, ask for feedback for improvement while also noting they reviewed it and not you. Or say next time I’ll review the samples so you don’t have to. Again calls our their review without looking overly aggressive.
