Checks and balances will work and are working as they're set-up to. Democrats need to regroup and refocus and figure out a way to win elections at the state and local level in order to get the votes back to change things so we can enact policies more in-line with our ideals. I think leaning towards the right can be troubling in some ways, but nothing we can really do about it when it's being driven by legitimate democratic elections and democratic processes. Need to win back the votes to make the change we want to see.
Authoritarianism limits political freedoms and dissenting voices. This is something both the far left and far right have in common. The far left wants to limit free speech that does not agree with their own views of the world. Just look at the riots currently at Berkeley. Even though the far rights policies and rhetoric are deplorable, the limiting of their right to freedom of speech and expression is not acceptable. A true free society must have freedom for everyone to express their ideas, regardless of whether you agree with those ideas or not. Unfortunately this problem is not just one sided.
We are f***ed. I am fearful.
^Its prevalent throughout the entire Media. Turn on CNN or MSNBC and you see the exact same thing just from the other side. That's why I get all my news from the journal and BBC
Trump isn't limiting freedoms for any citizens. The left is rioting to limit free speech. Get some perspective...
^ UCB isn't limiting it. It's the protestors and they're not agents of the state.
^right and it's the far left that is rioting and damaging person and property. I think we are on the same page here.
Maybe to clarify, I was saying the far left is authoritarian as well because they want to suppress the freedom to speech for ideologies that differ from theirs. Was trying to say that it's not a problem constrained to the right and we need to be careful because any type of authoritarianism is bad, whether from the right or left.
To SS1, I think the left, in general, is more open to discussing different viewpoints than the right is. All the right wants to do is call the left snowflakes and tell them to "suck it up, buttercup." I have met more lefties that are more than open to have a discussion, myself included (5 hour conversation with a conservative at a bar, it was very civil). What the left is not ok with, and neither should anyone, is tolerating hate speech. So yes, if someone on the alt-right says some racist or nationalist bs, we will want to call them out on it because those views go against our values.
#alternativefacts
Yeah no, just a fact. The left wing is the side beating and mugging and rioting.
The right wing are busy bringing religion back into politics, increasing control over women's bodies, and excluding those from Muslim countries that Trump does not do business with. Hurray for dictatorships.
You're throwing around crazy arguments like "we have a dictator". That argument is so crazy and has no factual support that it's not even worth discussing. Having a president act within the bounds of his authority granted to him by the constitution does not make him a dictator. If you're not smart enough to process that then lets just end the argument there. I'd be open for discussing his policies and whether we think they're harmful or helpful (I'd say more harmful right now), but I won't entertain any hysteria about a potential dictatorship.
I don't think democracy is working if a President is elected without the popular vote; that is, a minority of the population votes for him/her. Forgive me, but I always thought democratic elections elected leaders who commanded the majority of the votes.
Gah. I can't be arsed to get dragged into Trump drama. I have deadlines to meet and chargeable hours to beat.
And the electoral college was set up to protect the country from electing the wrong leader and they didn't do their job. So here we are.
^You can't say they didn't do their job because you disagree with the result. The electoral college did the job it was supposed to do. The states voted how their constituents wanted. Just because that doesn't line up with what people in CA and NY want, doesn't mean the system failed. The system worked as it was designed to.

Just so that we are clear there are exceptions to freedom of speech.
Also, I don't think anyone has a problem with people expressing their views, i think the problem begins when people go overboard and cause riots and cause damage, that is what they are against.
^Theres been no arrests or expulsions. At a minimum you can say that the state and school are accepting off it. Also I didn't say UCB was limiting it I said the far left also has an authoritarian stance, which is true.
