Didn’t know about the TB add until this post but now comparing the 2, yep agreed.

This idea has been around much longer than Taco Bell’s Ronald McDonald. The execution of this Microsoft one is absolutely awful nonetheless.

The Ronald McDonald thing was pretty well known. Someone at the agency knew better and let it slide - if not the creative team then the CD or CCO or EP.
Very well known. This is plagiarism.
Didn’t remember the Taco Bell spot—it’s much better.
BUT... I feel like it’s an ad trope/creative exercise to use unexpected spokespeople so who knows if the creatives actually meant to rip this off.
Yeah, but this is egregious plagiarism.
I know Microsoft is a massively difficult client, but yeah this really is the same idea done worse 😬
I had this same idea 20 years ago. Using people with famous names is not that big a creative leap, and it's fully possible to have similar ideas come to different people.
Yeah we all come up with similar ideas. What we don’t all do is make work that is a direct lift in every way of a Cannes winning campaign from a couple years ago.
I had forgotten about the Ronald McDonald commercial. Yeah, I agree with OP
