I can relate to this. I used to have a lot of friends in college and grad school, but since becoming a professional in a new city, I’ve lost touch with a lot of people. Texting is the main form of communication now, and between the distance and the countless flaky conversations on dating apps, I feel like I can’t connect with people anymore. When I’m finally with people in person again, I either don’t know what to say or feel like I can’t relate. Not sure what the cause is - I never had this problem before - but I think I need to force myself to get out more and relearn how to interact with people in real life.
I am also in a new city (kind of, been 8 months now), flake on a lot of dates, and have become a lot more quiet than I used to be in group settings. I had a big group dinner when I visited home recently and didn’t even know how to engage with 15+ of my close friends in one setting 🫠 Loved seeing them but felt awkward seeing so many people at once.
I hope things get better for you, A1. Rooting for you! I’ll also try to force myself to get out more 🥲
I mean, sometimes I don’t always have the capacity to answer a bunch of messages, but my eventual replies always make sense. I would speak to a hcp.
Many people do get anxiety as they get older. You’re more likely to experience events that trigger anxiety combined with age related changes to the brain.
