Old school
Sounds very “9 to 5” ish. I thought that was only in that time period lol
Sounds like he has no idea how to type and thinks it’s a time waster for you. Tell him it saves you time bc you are speedy.
I totally understand your partners request. Dictation is a skill that you learn by doing it so it is not surprising that you are uncomfortable and not very good at the beginning. However, if you think about the use of time, once you get good at dictation, you can always speak faster than you can type. You dictate the letter or document, hand the tape to your secretary and go onto another task. There’s no question it is more efficient. Especially at a time when the alternative was hand writing on a yellow pad.
Having said all that, no new attorney in the last 20 years has attempted to learn dictation and, personally, I would not ask junior associates in my firm to dictate. You have spent your whole school life typing your own papers, emails, texts and not writing by hand. Your generation learned to think and compose at a keyboard so you are in a different position than my generation. If you want to get this partner off your back, you might try explaining in terms the partner will understand why for you dictation will not be faster
Even 20 years ago, almost nobody did this. This is insane.
Thank you. I understand his request as well. I think a large part of us issue is that I am not always good at proofreading and if I dictate things he thinks it would help with that.
Sounds like you might benefit from purchasing the Wordrake plugin for word. Our firm uses it and it’s a very solid tool.
