the pathway to licensure has broken me: mind, body, and spirit.

i am a poor test taker, and was diagnosed after failing the bar. i developed so many coping mechanisms to get this far undiagnosed. no wonder i have not been able to demonstrate my skills on the bar.

i moved states because abortion rights were not available in my state. i will probably lose my job because i failed again. idk where to go from here. all i know is that i don't want to keep living as a shell of my former self.

Take this as a testimony of your strength. You're one more hurdle away from getting to where you are destined to be. It's okay to ask for help when you need it. You've got a lot on your plate and you are for sure feeling overwhelmed by it all. Find resources to help you navigate through your emotions and situations.

The path did this to me as well. Law school was ok, struggled but didn’t really associate it to my ADHD (I was diagnosed 2nd term of law school but was not very educated on ADHD and did it bother learning more about it).

The path to bar passage really really broke me. 2 years since licensure and I’m still working on my self-confidence, and imposter syndrome. It is pretty heavy in my day to day practice and litigating is extra stressful bc I don’t fully trust myself and my skills, knowledge, etc. quite yet.

Got an ADHD coach and that really helped. But now looking for a therapist to dig a little deeper. Might even have a small case of PTSD from failing bar 3 times.

Hang in there. You are capable. You just need to approach the exam differently. Find out your best skills on the exam and also your weaknesses. For me, it was MBE (1.8min per question was not enough time for my ADHD brain to pick apart each long ass fact pattern and select an answer I was confident about) let alone to just “shut up and pick it” as Grossman would say. Pay for tutor(s). Take stimulated exams. You got this 🙏🏼❤️

Another good tip for ADHD peeps who struggle on tests- how fast is your reading? If you’re a slow reader it’s likely because your eyes get distracted-you can retrain your eyes. Get a ruler and use it to underline a line of written text. Then use a red pencil as a pointer, focusing on just the word the pencil is on (think karaoke or the old Disney sing along VHS when we were kids, with the bouncing ball).

1) This focuses your eyes on just what is needed and keeps them from getting distracted. 2) once your eyes are focused you’re able to read vast sums in a short time= tons of mental stimulation. 3) Because you’re not re-reading the same thing over and over you’re also not getting bored. 4) Momentum!!

Trying to take standard tests with adhd as a slow reader feels like you’re being handicapped. But if you are a fast reader? It’s not even fair…

Maybe she’s born with it. Maybe it’s a mental health disease…

I somehow passed the CA bar on my 5th try before my diagnosis, with English as a second language and a foreign JD. Never good at academia. If I did it, anyone can. Just focus on beating the test. And for the love of god, look into medication. If I had Adderall while studying, I would have failed it probably once or twice at the most.

I've been there before. The bar can really take a hit on your self esteem. I know it's hard but try not to spiral. Take a step back and decide if this is the career choice you want, if you feel it's worth all the stress... if so try again. You can do it. Don't let this setback define your capabilities.

You can do this. And someday you will be glad that you did.

I have ADHD and it is affecting my family life. I forget commitments I make to my wife literally SECONDS after making them, and it is so defeating to be so consistently unreliable. At work I have enough systems set up to help me keep up with my deadlines etc, but struggle to find solutions for home life. Any tips? I am not medicated yet, but am not against starting. I just don’t know if it helps throughout the day or only for a few hours. TIA 😭

I keep outlook closed while working because the notifications are very distracting and I have this huge compulsion to respond right away. I planned to open it hourly and set alarms so I wouldn’t forget. My colleague next door mentioned politely that he could hear an alarm going off every hour. 3rd year associate here. I'm a corporate attorney. After a rough year of a lot of personal (much of which led to my diagnosis of ADHD). I FINALLY passed my state’s UBE in February on my fourth try after three attempts undiagnosed and the last one with testing accommodations. (How I graduated all levels of academia without accommodations baffled my neuropsychologist) I’ve been applying for jobs since July with little luck and I’m worried that firms see the gap between graduating and my bar licensure as me being stupid/lazy with the exam.
