I am a Catholic and I am 100% done with the Catholic Church. Francis is a lunatic and his predecessors - John Paul included - where conspirators in the largest child sex scandal in history. Let’s think through all the terrible things about the church:
1. Child molestation with a grand conspiracy going to the top to hide it and allow it to go on for decades
2. Woman forced to live in poverty in the church while priests live it up
3. Divorces where shamed in the church for the longest time - mostly falling on the women
4. Woman can be priests - why?
5. Priests can’t marry
6. Church frowns upon fertility treatments

I could go on and on - but seriously it is a disaster and needs to pack it in.

Many of these great people throughout history believed in God, or at least religion including Tesla. Tesla was actually raised by a Christian pastor. It’s not clear whether he believed in God, but he was the opposite of an atheist, he was very much a theist who believed in the importance of religion/spirituality, Musk has said the same

Pope Francis makes a valid argument and one that should be expected from the leader of the Catholic Church. His silence on the need for reasonable people to procreate would just leave a vacuum for fringe groups to grow into (ex. Quiverfull). I’d rather be surround by flawed but reasonable Catholics who are tolerant of other religions than fundamentalists looking to raise an army of God.

Separately, pedophilia is a failure of individuals and isn’t unique to one group, culture, or community. Hence why we should strive to punish and hold people accountable. An institution as large as the Church reflects the society at large. As simple as that.

In Islam you can legally marry a 9 year girl. So they’ve kind of baked it into their religion.

Is the pope planning to cash app me part of the Vatican fortune to take care of my kid if I have one? If not, silence. I will continue to travel every month and spend my money on massages for myself weekly vs. having a child.

I understand you feel that way.

All the same - if anyone ever does feel in need of an exorcism please know your local Catholic priest is someone you can reach out to.

The pope is spot on. Sorry to all of the pushing 40 basic dog moms living their best lives at brunch with the girls every weekend.

When will we (as a species) ever get rid of this nonsense that is religion? Its so sad that we still have these religious leaders who really dont add a lot of value to society, yet they command so much respect and eyeballs.

like

Far worse things have been done to stop religion than religion has ever done. LEK is also correct in that we would not have many of the institutions today were it not for religion including educational institutions. It is only a recent thing that public colleges and schools exist, before it was mostly being pushed and built by the church. Study religion history and how much it has given to society. It’s influence is everywhere

In what world is better to force/guilt someone who doesn’t want kids into having them, rather than let them just…not have kids? You’re opening the adult up to a life of misery and resentment, and the kid to a childhood if not lifetime of feeling the results of being unwanted. At best both ends are unhappy and trying to fake it. At worst you now open up ample opportunity for child neglect, mistreatment, abuse and the adult to deal with depression or worse.

If you or the pope were truly worried about humanity you would spend your time and effort providing care and resources to the millions of already living kids worldwide who are homeless, in foster care, in abusive homes, living in poverty or destitution, etc. And/or working with any human of any age with those or other real issues.

It's important to consider sphere of influence vs sphere of interest.

While the Pope is in my sphere of interest, I can't begin to fathom being at that sphere of influence.

And I think I'd tend to agree with you on the comparison to consulting; however being merely human thats where my level of understanding ends.

Frameworks are important to help us understand even if they are not perfect.

Also the pope is only infallible when teaching on matter faith and morals. Your comment made it seem more far reaching. So we'd best rein back the scope on that 🤣

I won't go so far as to say - I'd hope the Pope would think about this, that, or the other thing. That far outreaches my sphere of influence, and dwelling in them is not going to make my life better or help me develop spiritually from where I am right now.

Okay but counterpoint, the Pope understands that climate change is a grave threat to humanity and the planet. The single greatest way people, especially in developed countries, can reduce their carbon footprint is by not having kids.

I'm kind of with you on the Bezo's space flight.

Unless there is a clear path to teraforming that doesn't destroy earth.... What are we even doing?

M1, it seems that you are really into it based on your answers. Honest question, what is your take on abusing all those kids by priests?

like

MSMT1 - having not grown up in it - it certainly makes you think about every detail. None of it is like a blind assumption or based on what my parents did.

I also had a small chuckle on the LOTR reference ;).

D6 if you were to hypothetically believe in LOTR or believe it was real - on a spiritual level that would be a step closer to Catholicism.

Also on his close companion - I thought about bringing up his close companion's wife's death and how that rocked his faith. However, I don't know enough about it to say much on the topic.

M1 the pope is no saint my guy. I would argue he is even more sinister than the average “secularist”. No secularist would casually ignore the sexual abuse of so many children, CHILDREN! The best glimpse of what purity on earth is supposed to look like

That video seemed to be taking a lot of accountability for it.

So are the issue mitigations that have been put in place on further training on recognizing signs of abuse and the importance of reporting it.

It's odd to me that the only things people seem to know about the Catholic church is that
1) There is some bad history (eg crusades/abuse)
2) The Pope teaches that dogs/cats can't replace children

We fail to ankowledge the beautiful parts such as:
1) The continuous seeking of how to live in better communion of one another
2) The sacrifice as a path to sanctification (said another way the lack of focus of self and the fight against selfishness) /Eucharist
3) The sacraments and blessings
4) The seasonal nature of the church and how it allows us to bring different focuses into our lives at different times (rather than just make a resolution and forget about it by the end of the year)

There's just so much more to it....

Catholicism has always been wholly committed to creating more Catholics, at any cost.

With regards to this point probably fertility and how fertility is viewed as such a gift. Through proper planning one can control their family size - it's not frowned up to do so. Also how having a family allows us to emulate the God head.

Other misconceptions/how we view things different than other Christians (word Christians used broadly here some of them also believe in some of this stuff)
1) We only use the bible (we also have the catechism and the magisterium)
2) Eucharistic view points
3) Views of the god head being 3 persons and 1 devine being
4) Sacraments and their meaning
5) That eastern (Byzantine) and Western (Roman) Catholics are different
6) That we recognize more bible books (eg Macabees (where some view points on purgatory are exhibited)Tobit, Ester, to name a few)

I imagine there are quite a few more. This is just a list of biggies off the top of my head
