Democratised collaboration*

Figma is at its most powerful when you have a room of non designers as a part of the process in the file with you either passively or actively - with their needs, ideas and feedback being channelled by a designer into figma. Interestingly, that's also when designers demonstrate their real super powers too 😉
Perhaps it’s the working culture that needs to exist first? Like Figma is really helpful for collaboration but in the end it’s just a tool.
And lead with an example. Show them how it’s done and what kind of collaborations are possible with Figma.
I was in a team when the migration happened from Sketch to Figma and it’s very stressful as most files is broken and the team had to fix them every now and then. Get the basics sorted out and then step it up to the collaborative tool side.
It's important to create safe collaborative spaces for designers AND others in Figma. Designers are often subject to unwarranted and uninformed feedback, bringing everyone else into figma can therefore feel like reliquinishing 'their' safe space. It is the same reason why some people prefer or need to work in drafts. The first and most important part to creating a good culture that enables Figma collaboration in your organisation is establishing what the right behaviours & rituals and ensuring these understood - especially by non designers. The next part is around creating expectationss when kicking off sessions - what we're here to discuss or solve today, which things are off limits. This gives control back to the designer to then be the leader in their safe space. Once you have these, I've found leading by example to be the best sell on how to leverage the benefits of co-designing. I would recommend doing it more as a group of creative/designers first and then more gradually involve additional stakeholders as the muscle gets built. Collaboration in cross functional teams is never easy, and Figma brings its own challenges, which is why consciously collaborating is so key! ✌🏻
Coach
Is there a reason why designers’ feelings have to be “coddled” when they routinely plow over everyone else’s, including software engineers and stakeholders? At a certain point it’s costing the company real money, as it’s causing major technical debt.
