Happy Tuesday! I’m looking to make more connections in HR and was wondering if anyone would like to connect on LinkedIn? I would love to speak to some HR managers or HRBPs that wouldn’t mind sharing your journey/career path with me. My email is helen.alston@yahoo.com and name is Helen Alston on LinkedIn 😊

I found these two threads from the Chair of UCSF Dept of Medicine compelling, and now expect a (safe) return to (relative) normalcy to enjoy this spring and summer. https://twitter.com/bob_wachter/status/1484729196060446722?s=21 The main thesis is your risk of getting sick based on the odds of being near a contagious person. Omicron will run out of new hosts in another month, and re-infections are rare (within the same variant). The probably of exposure will plummet. The thread goes into specific numbers and rules of thumb to adopt.

Pretty much normal here if you are vaccinated, has been for a while. The only restrictions are on the unvaccinated, they have to eat outside and can’t go to concerts, the office, bars, games etc. international travel is infeasible. Seems like that will continue for a while since so long as there are cases the restrictions continue, as long as people stay unvaccinated each variant has plenty of meat for the grinder. Since that’s a self inflicted wound no one really cares about them.
This conversation underscores how unprepared I believe we are for a transition back to normal. The engagement, morale, and belonging issues are boiling under the surface and I think we have to figure this out. And quickly. FYI - the most predominantly used vaccines and boosters (Moderna and Pfizer) are not fully approved. They are both still under EUA.
I live in Florida — it feels like everybody has gone to “normalcy” for 6 months plus and this is where people travel to get away from COVID.
Agreed, it impacts everybody. My own parents (at-risk health conditions) just left on a cruise because they don’t want to lose time. I think Omicron is giving society more confidence as the morbidity rates are much lower and people want “normalcy”. God help us when a more dangerous variant hits.
Let us know how your other COVID predictions have worked out
Pretty darn good if I say so myself. Thanks for asking. 😎
Shift as in kids in school? Absolutely and everywhere. Kids no longer needing masks at school? Definitely. Mandated actions of various types? Yes. We are two years in folks and the vaccines work to reduce unfavorable outcomes. Time to largely move forward so the next generation isn’t afraid of their own shadow.
“Normalcy” is doing a lot of work in this post. Everyone is in their own echo chambers on reality and normalcy. There is no going back to 2019 life. We tried going back to pseudo-normalcy in the summer and our ICUs filled up again. That isn’t normalcy, imo.
I think that is a good point. I mean that there will be a push to end all restrictions. I don’t think our firms are ready for this. Many of our clients will want us back, and I’m not sure we are set up for it.
UK is opening up and that is only going to continue. We are expecting no covid restrictions by the end of March, including self-isolation for anyone infected. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/jan/19/boris-johnson-announces-end-to-all-omicron-covid-restrictions-in-england
The vaccine protects me, and at this point it’s not stopping spread. The healthcare system is overloaded but thats also in large part a product of limited capacity and closure of rural hospitals. The people generally needing hospitalization are often unvaccinated and avoiding masks anyway so are these restrictions truly making a significant difference at this point?
No
Nope. Different culture and dynamics. And Europe isn’t shifting as much as you are saying either
MD2 - I live in the states, from the UK and just arrived here today for vacation. Multiple airports, new reports and observations - UK might be redefining normalcy but is nowhere back to the normal we knew precovid. Large diff is cultural but infrastructure differences vastly different compared to the US - nationalized medicine, unlimited free tests, massive testing culture, vaccine cards/passports are all in play here - the freedumb lobby here in the US will ensure we don’t get to enjoy the benefits of normalcy and propagate this pandemic for a long while
Yes - give it 6 to 8 weeks.
