The TRUTH about most of these attacks on Asian Americans: they are hate crimes but not in the traditional sense, they ARE economically-motivated crimes targeting the Asian American population because of our lack of political power and hence lower chance of being held accountable. Politicians refuse to address the problem, and mainstream media refuse to report these crimes, because the perpetrators are often African Americans, which is an inconvenient truth for their narratives of racism.

Trying to make "EcONOMicalLY MoTIVaTED" and racist hate crimes MECE is some creative mental gymnastics that's been spun up because what we've experienced on a day to day basis as Asians alone is not enough, and our experience does not fit the white liberal narrative of "POCs can't be racist".

Even worse to see Asian apologists who suck the teet of white liberals, fight for the white liberal narrative to earn brownie points from their white liberal masters, and turn against their own by invalidating and condemning very real and traumatic experiences. Asian apologists and their white liberal masters are absolute vermin.

which is an inconvenient truth for their narratives of racism.

We need to be able to look at what’s happening in a nuanced way, and discuss the honest reality (and not hide from inconvenient truths) if we want to improve things for the Asian American community.

So far since COVID I had 2 racist incidents, both from white men - but just verbal.

Prior to COVID, by SO was randomly physically assaulted by a black teen (fortunately no injuries).

Anecdotal, but I don’t want to point fingers too much at other races. Plenty of good people of every race, but let’s castigate people for being racist, without overly focusing on their race.

like

Yes agree COMPLETELY that there are good and bad people of every race. I wish the racial dimension of this did not exist, but it does (inconvenient truth).

Your distinction of COVID-related vs. not is a necessary distinction, which is often (sometimes deliberately) distorted and conflated by the media/government.

That’s the inconvenient truth:
The media/government FOCUS on COVID-related incidents of racist remarks of white people (because it fits their narrative) and
IGNORE the much more serious violent crimes of assaults/rapes/murders perpetrated against Asian Americans.

Both of these are serious issues, but different in their origins and impacts, which is why we need to discuss and understand them fully.

This post reeks of white nationalist propaganda.

There's no such thing as a "nontraditional hate crime". For a crime to be a hate crime, the crime needs to be motivated by prejudice on the basis of race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, or national origin. If a crime is economically motivated, then it is not a hate crime.

like

@Director 1, can you give us a breakdown of the hate crime statistics?

Next, no one has been able to provide any evidence of the mainstream media's refusal to publish these hate crimes. In other words, traditional or established broadcasting or publishing outlets were made aware of hate crime stories, but were unwilling to broadcast or publish this news in order to deliberately censor it. I wonder why I haven’t seen any evidence of this wacky conspiracy theory. Hmm.

like

M2 - can you provide a response to my post and stats/evidence about crimes against asians? Im not talking about hate crimes but just crimes in general (which was OPs point and we went down this rabbit hole of hate crimes).

2nd your argument that any economically motivated crime cant be a hate crime is hogwash and thats a rationalization. The fact thats a burden the proof most likely means hate crimes are less likely to be prosecuted and pursued and are underreported. Also, Such as a statement can rationalize all types of behavior. Its very clear asians are being targeted - its become such a sensitive issue to OPs point that doesnt fit the narrative in that police departments dont want to post pictures of suspects because its just showing how the police is showcasing another AA suspect and that doesnt fit the narrative of the current climate. The MSM isnt showcasing who the perpetrators that are committing these acts but just linking to uptick in Xenophobia due to COVID. Its like please, this targeting has happened long before COVID. And regardless of the left vs right, liberal vs. conservative, dem vs rep, i dont have high expectations of the MSM, which is why asians are angry, we are being targeted, we are victims right now, but we have no recourse, no platform. Jeremy Lin gets called coronavirus in a basketball game, but hey somehow in the world of social media and the fastest news cycle ever we cant get a name on who said it?!?! Thats BS

3rd - dont ask for the data when its incomplete, Asians are the least likely to report crimes to the police for several reasons (cultural heritage in coming from totalitarian govts, perception that police interests wouldnt be aligned with ours, general lack of sympathy exhibited towards asians, and the general ineffectiveness of police). I mean we have police arresting asian shopowners for firing a legal firearm when theyre being robbed,.....we have district attorneys that arent pursuing maximum charges for suspects wanting to seek “restorative justice” methods when evidence is a slam dunk

4th - i would like to see your data on how asians feel theyre being racially targeted and because some strongly believe theyre being target by AAs means theres a white nationalist propoganda movement going on , in your words, sounds like a conspiracy theory going on....

5th - if you want your data, go ahead and see the suspects for our elderly victims that are getting targeted in freak broad daylight, you wont ever see their faces on the national news, doesnt fit the narrative of the current climate so you’ll have to google them, im sure you’ll see a common theme

like

@Director 1, both you and the OP are trying to alter reality in an attempt to redefine hate crimes (or “nontraditional hate crimes”) as all crimes. Just stop. The topic of hate crimes is not not some tangential, rabbit hole discussion and you know this. Just stop. In the author’s original post, they clearly stated, “The TRUTH about most of these attacks on Asian Americans: they are hate crimes but not in the traditional sense, they ARE economically motivated-crimes targeting the Asian American population…” Just stop.

As I’ve already explained, there is a clear set of criteria that classifies a crime as a hate crime. The point is that there needs to be evidence of a hate crime in order to charge a suspect with a hate crime. As a hypothetical example, take a robbery case. In order for the prosecutor to charge a suspect with a hate crime IN ADDITION to robbery, there needs to be evidence of a hate crime. Prosecutors do not bring charges to suspects based on your biased opinion or speculation that you attempt to pass as fact. Your biased opinion or speculation passed as fact is not the equivalent of actual evidence that would stand up in a court of law.

The reason why your referenced article is irrelevant is because it does not reference any hate crime statistics. That was just your attempt to redefine “violent incidents” as “nontraditional hate crimes".

like

@M2 - at this point we can just agree to disagree.

If you want to stick that criteria for whats legally treated as a hate crime, thats your perogative. Under those conditions, it would be difficult if ever to prove hate or racial motivation in addition to robbery crime. In general, hate crimes are very hard to prove. That doesnt mean theyre not happening. And to stick to such criteria only rationalizes that behavior and doesnt acknowledge the plight of victims. That would be the same as rationalizing the Europeans and the slave trade because hey it was economic reasons, or hey lets just rationalize how the Japanese treated the rest of Asia in the name of imperialism 75 years ago. Or hey war crimes such as rape dont matter because heys its war....Hey - Im sure in all those cases they werent trying to prey on those who they felt to be weaker or inferior races that wouldnt be able to fight back or put up a challenge.

If you want to ignore the countless incidents of asian businesses, home invasions, attacks on our elderly in broad daylight, rappers suggesting to rob a chink in their lyrics because we carry cash and have jewelry in our homes, and ignore who those perpetrators are (many of whom are caught on camera), thats all good. To your point, maybe some of us just got it wrong and are seeing it incorrectly.....

Your logic in asking OP and i trying to prove hate crimes against asians is like trying to prove Trump isnt racist - difficult to prove with objective data, the MSM depending on who you watch would disagree, theres going to be those who support him and deny it, theres no “data” to factually support that hes a racist, theres nothing to legally charge thats hes racist, but hey - i think we know the deal....

Lastly, you say im biased. Hell yeah, im fucking biased. I see my elderly who are as old and look just like my parents, aunties, and uncles getting attacked in broad daylight just going for a morning walk, theyre not just getting robbed but their skulls are being bashed in the process, as if it wasnt enough to just take our cash. I see district attorneys trying to tell us to go after restorative approaches to break “the cycle” - ok thats bullshit, i see police departments telling us not to arm ourselves and to trust them to handle the law - but hey lets instead charge and arrest shopowners with firing a weapon when being robbed but hey i wont publish pictures of suspects because i think it’ll trigger a racist reaction. Im still pissed and biased from 30 years ago when my parents first came to the states and unbeknownst to them they opened a Churchs Chicken franchise in the hood - and was subject to multiple robberies when the KFC across the street never got robbed....and the police response was “you know youre an Asian family trying to do business in an AA neighborhood, these robbers are going to continue to prey on you because youre Asian, you should think about if you really want to do business here and you should probably take your business elsewhere”, yeah real helpful 5-0, oh and lastly - i have to think about how brave my wife is being with our 2 kids at home when i travel for this job (pre-covid), when her and her brothers were subject to a home invasion by a AA gang that was known for targeting Asian families in Arcadia, CA (a predominantly Chinese suburb in LA) when they were in high school, they were stripped down, and tied up in the bathroom while the gang robbed the house. Does any of this fit the definition of a hate crime, based on current legal definitions - i agree with you, it doesnt, so we can agree there. But I and some other asians will feel like we are being targeted, are being victimized, and most importantly are being “hated” on racial boundaries. Sometimes we wonder if we were a hispanic family or a white family would we be subjected to this....you have a ton of Asian 1st gen asian families thinking of moving Canada, or back to China, Taiwan or Korea and so forth because they wonder if its safe anymore for them in the US - im sure theyre just being overly emotional.....Just because you cant prove it legally or with “data” doesnt mean the feelings are not there and for you to say its not and not acknowledge that fact is an extremely insensitive position for the thousands of asians living, breathing, and feeling it on the daily.

My clients are pushing back on it this year, and I can't say I blame them. If I were in their shoes, I'd rather take the risk of not filing than the expense of filing again. From my own point of view, I don't really want to spend my time on such returns, either, even if the revenue and easy return are nice.
