I would go nuts. My son will be 4 months old on Saturday. My wife and I have determined that we are not baby people, I went back to work after 3 weeks and she went back gladly at 3 months. He spends his days in a high end daycare with early childhood professionals and we don't go insane.
So who is paying for this?
It is a nice idea but having to pay for someone adding no value, with no strings, for a year is not sensible.
If you don't want one parent to stay at home with the kids, then why do you have them? Never understood why you have kids just to have someone else raise them for most of the time that they are awake.
I bet M2 thinks the parent who stays home should be the woman too ☝🏻where is the troll rater when you need him?
Why did I have kids and not want to stop working? Because: - I believe that you can have a career (which for me gives me personal fulfillment) and be a good mother at the same time - I believe each spouse contributing to household expenses enables a more equal partnership in which domestic duties and parenting are shared which in turn creates a situation where partners are fair and neither is taking advantage of the other - in this uncertain economy two incomes creates less likelihood of having a situation where you are unable to take care of your household due to unemployment - I want to give my children a lifestyle which includes travel and I wouldn't be able to afford it otherwise
M2, if you don't have kids you won't understand. To answer your question though- my wife is giving up about 6,000 hours with our son by working, I'm the breadwinner for now - he'll then be in Pre-K. Then school. Then college. Then we'll see him on major holidays. Your children are going to spend the vast majority of their lives away from you. You'll still be their parent.
You had kids because you wanted them. It is obvious but it is your choice.
Paying someone to be out of the workforce is coming at someone elses expense. Perhaps there should be a subsection of unemployment availabe to them?
We all pay into it so it would be nice to get a portion of that back or see it go to a cause like this.
Taxes on companies either directly or indirectly are challenging particularly on behalf of smaller companies. If you own a small company thwn you understand the challenges that this could bring.
No thanks, I don't want to have to pay for your holidays when you have kids.
I totally support that!
How old are you DD1 if you don't mind my asking?
32, misses is 31
BC1 I was raised by a stay at home, I certainly respect the choice. My wife is a cannabis industry entrepreneur, laying low for a few years world irreparably damage her career and business. Discovering that we aren't really into playing with rattles and teething rings all day only sealed the decision for us
16 weeks is generous compared to the rest of the US but nothing in the grand scheme of things. Most kids don't sleep through the night until -6months. Even then, breastfeeding is such a burden on mom. 1 year would enable breastfeeding- of which this country is woefully behind the curve in supporting. Pumping at work is just not feasible for so many mothers - so they give up. I'm grateful every day to have taken 4.5-5 months with each of my kids but it keeps me up at night thinking of the stress most mothers endure going back at 6weeks (if that).
@BC1 - no you don't.
As much as I would love to have a year long paid break from work, what's the incentive to my employer to keep me around for a year without me actually doing any work? Why not just let me go and hire someone who is going to be there that whole year and isn't planning on having kids?
D1 - because we have too many people and automation will mean fewer jobs. There are more people taking than putting into the coffers and that imbalance just isn't sustainable
This is just ridiculous guys.. we should have fewer children? We are already a super old society. We (westerners) should have more children and should be incentivised for it
Totally think the state should pay for it. It's a society issue - if we don't breed, there will be no "us" in the future. If we don't have children the system collapses. Not having state to pay for it is the same as saying the state will be broken, as we end up with a nation of old people, not paying taxes and using communal goods and services...
A1 - no I don't what?
Yes ! Even if you're not a parent
But how many kids?
* by breadwinner it's assumed that I'm working no matter what
