The walls in my office are made of paper and I can hear my neighboring colleagues clear as day when they’re on the phone. I now dread having to make phone calls because, without rhyme or reason, I HATE people listening to me on the phone regardless of the subject matter. Anyone else have this irrational privacy need? No? Okay 🥺

Totally understand - i feel the exact same way. I used to work for a partner who would take calls on speaker phone with his office door open. Not having anxiety must be great. Haha

Turn on low level classical music or buy a white noise machine and put on the wall with the nosy neighbor. Maybe that will help.

Totally relate. I have anxiety about people hearing my calls, but also hate hearing others’ calls in the office.

like

They aren’t listening to you.

funny

Yes! I brought a small fan in and keep it on the other side my office to help muffle the sounds from my office. I haven't had any complaints or comments about the audio quality so having it away from my desk but close to the door seems to be a good solution. It's more of a mental security blanket haha

like

Would a large, decorative wall hanging or tapestry help add a layer of sound insulation? Something as close to a sound-proofing blanket as possible. Search for "Acoustic Wall Art."

You’re on to something, CEO.

Yes! And to top it off, my neighboring colleague makes comments about my work calls sometimes. She’s actively listening and that drives me nuts!

Omg that sounds horrible.

Seems perfectly rational to me.

Same boat. I ended up getting fans for my office (also helps with stuffiness when door is closed) and I use sound cancelling headphones for phone calls. The more calls you do the more frequently the easier it gets.

Also do some social anxiety hypnosis sessions (try Harmony app for example). Helps a lot. This is social anxiety. I struggle with it too

Off topic opinion : Our current generation is too focused on wealth ? Like the saying goes "kya lekar aye the , kya lekar jaoge " .. why is there so much animosity in the IT industry? Why do team mates fight with each other ? Why do managers make life hell to their immediate reports and then experience the same from their managers? Why isn't anyone happy with changing jobs and even after 100 -150 % hikes ? I know this can happen in any job but it seems more prominent in our industry.

Additional Posts in Law

Trying to plan the next move in my life and I don’t know what to anticipate in terms of salary potential. I’m a 7th year doing insurance defense (slip and fall) with no trial experience. Didn’t do so hot in law school but still top half of my class at UM law. Some have told me I could lateral and make $150k, others say I’d be lucky to hit $80k. I know there are endless options in terms of what would govern this range, but what would be realistic to shoot for?

Their a little old school in their methods but I do see the younger gen. coming in to make changes. 2nd offer is at a newer firm however i’ve heard great things, and they offered 80k, unl. PTO, 1500 billable hours, bonus incentives qrtrly, & 50% health ins. WHY can’t I make a decision? HELP
