Heading into busy season like
New to Fishbowl?
unlock all discussions on Fishbowl.
When you posted something on Fishbowl as a joke and some over caffeinated people started coming for you like
Pwc 1 is why I didn't accept my B4 offers
PwC 1, that laundry list of benefits -- you're no doubt IFS. Life is different out on the audit road 98% under managers and partners who may not be supportive of health. My current partner is -- he bought the team standing desks, a tangible value representing dollars spent beyond platitudes sent in PwC Inside emails. The audacity to pretend that meaningful personal health action can be taken during 80-hour week busy season is laughable.
15 minute yoga is not going to solve my sleep deprivation. Relaxing walks down the hall won't fix these deleterious influences on my personal health. But cold, hard, cash benefits would make them feel a little more worth it.
Who actually believes this crap?
Having helped with some of the business case for Be well, work well you are completely missing the point.
Be well, work well is about keeping both cows happy and feeling well so they produce the best milk for themselves, their families, as well as others in a sustainable fashion amidst the demand for more milk.
Currently, the cows are overworked, tired, and stressed out and it’s impacting themselves, their family’s, and those they work with.
We have two choices: continue as we have been and act like nothing is happening or try to educate and empower the cows on how to navigate the demand both personally and professionally so they stay happy and well and still can address the demand for more milk.
I don’t know about you but I think the worst thing to do is continue the status quo and not mention the words well-being in the workplace. Not saying the Firm has it figured out but it’s the beginning of a conversation.
Don’t get in the way of it happening.
Be Well Work Well puts the burden completely on us to stay healthy as a way to avoid actual remuneration, like gym membership reimbursement. It's another classic defined benefit plan vs. 401 (k) situation -- the employees get less under the illusion of greater choice.
PwC 2 - so what would you classify our well-being rewards program, gym discounts, in office programs (I get free in office meditation classes in my office), life works resources, and other benefits like comprehensive EHE physicals under if not remuneration?
Yes of course there has to be an individual mandate here because no one size fits all and everyone has different way of expressing what works and what their priority is (i.e losing weight, mental health counseling,etc...) in terms of their own well-being.
If you are waiting to be handed something - you’re right - it’s not happening. Gotta stand up for what it means to you and utilize the myriad of resources around you as well as this green light from Firm leadership.
Haven’t even had my coffee yet!!! Watch out. Happy to hear you don’t think Be well, work well is a joke.
Pwc 2, lets say you are right and pwc removes all bs to give better remuneration in 2018 to all folks. My guess is that 10% of ppl that do not like what they are doing will stop looking dor other job as they have better remuneration, the other 90% will have other things to complain about (its never only one thing) and will remain unhappy. the guys that join the firm after 2018 will never know that this raise in salary happened, and will only see that all that ‘crap’ like gym membership, well being rewards, etc do not exist - other words, this decision has a very limited impact on year 1 only.
I believe pwc really mean when ask you to work more focused to have more time. I also belive pwc really mean it when ask you to take care of yourself, as this will be better for all ppl involved. To finish, a message from leadership is always the first step to force a change of mind to the ‘old minded’ bosses that think all this is bs. I understand the joke of OP, and I laugh, but I think be well work well is serious and i’m proud my company think that way
PwC 2 - I know the life of client service because I was a manager in client service serving some of our largest FS clients. So I get it and am not saying it’s easy.
All I am saying is, it is worth it to start with the little things because they do make a difference and add up over time. It’s better to start doing something then throw your hands up and do nothing and blame the Firm, Partners, etc while your health deteriorates and stress takes over... that’s just lazy and irresponsible to yourself.
In fact, the reason I am so passionate about this is because of how challenging it is to do the work we do and the mistakes I made along the way that had health consequences for me that were pretty scary.
In the end, I am just trying to help create some change in the habits and behaviors we have at work because all of the working world in general has bad ones and throwing just straight cash at people wont necessarily fix that. If you want to knock me for that I can handle it.
Be Well, Work Well?
Huh. Do all Big4 enact near-same initiatives at the same time? Sounds exactly like what KPMG started this fiscal year.
