I am noticing that McKinsey is increasingly recruiting at non-elite schools (very roughly speaking not top 15 schools). At my old undergrad, 5 years ago the most competitive firm to show up was EY. This year McKinsey took 4 non-internship full hires. Why is McKinsey going “down market” for recruiting? Are elite school kids losing interest in consulting so McK has to cast a wider net? Or is McK seeking a wider pool for other reasons? I advise undergrads on consulting so want to be best informed.

Admittedly I was a little off this morning, and had a hard time finding the will to bear down and work. A Partner reached out to see if I was okay. I was honest, and said I was in a bad headspace this morning. What I thought was a nice gesture of checking in turned into "you can't be in a bad headspace and expect to keep your position" and "we are ready to let you go." Wow, thanks. Guess I'll just wait for the firing then.

Other than higher pay (I didn’t become a lawyer to get rich 🤣) what is the benefit of working for BigLaw, or private practice in general? As a government lawyer, I make 6 figures, have excellent benefits, no billable hours requirements, more time off than I know what to do with (including mental health days), a pension, a 401(K), option to chose whether to WFH or not, no weekend work, no working before 8am or after 5pm. It seems like so many lawyers in private practice are unhappy.

I’m worried my boss knows I keep breaking into their house.
