There have been a lot of ring questions lately, but I have a different one! I love my engagement ring, but it’s white gold and more elaborate, and I mostly wear gold now. I’d love to “upgrade” to a sold gold band with a bigger solitaire stone. I’ll go Moissanite, so price is not an issue. The question is - has this made anyone’s partner feel bad? I’ve mentioned it a few times to my husband to plant the seed, but I still worry about hurting his feelings. Curious to hear others’ experiences.

Do you have an anniversary coming up? We used our 20th anniversary to “upgrade” - avoiding any hurt feelings and gives you an answer when people ask.

Our five year is this year. I’m also celebrating a significant career change and looking at a (hopefully!) very nice bonus this summer, which is one of the reasons I was thinking about doing it now. I wear really simple jewelry otherwise, so unless I got gold hoops, I wouldn’t buy myself a different piece of jewelry.

How long have you had the original engagement ring?

like

Six years, so it hasn’t been too long. The alternative is doing a plain gold band I can wear sometimes when I want everything to match - the stone would purely be an indulgent present for myself.

Did he pick the original ring out by himself? You say you’ve mentioned it ‘a few times.” What was the reaction?

like

Seems like the five year anniversary would be a great time! Tastes change, and you wear it every day, so I wouldn’t feel bad at all! I love that he is supportive of you doing what you want to do (my partner is the same). Seems like he will understand this, especially if you explain that you love your original engagement ring but your tastes have changed, and it’s not personal. Considering you are not asking for a bigger diamond and going Moissanite, this seems perfectly reasonable to me. (That’s assuming it’s financially smart for you guys, which I’m assuming it is since you said cost isn’t an issue.)

I wear more yellow gold in the summer and platinum in the winter.

What I've been doing is just wearing one of my yellow gold rings with rubies in place of my engagement ring/ wedding band. I've also been toying with the idea of designing a ring in yellow gold with a small diamond I inherited from my grandmother.

In my case, I don't think my husband feels offended (and honestly haven't even mentioned it to him) because I still wear my engagement ring a lot.

I have also mentioned the idea of getting a new ring with a fake diamond for when we travel so I don't have to worry about it getting stolen/ lost. He hasn't seemed offended.

like

I don’t have anything gold to wear in place of this - if I don’t get a ring with a stone I will definitely be getting a plain gold band. I don’t have a separate wedding band, so I was already planning on doing that for travel anyways!

I upgraded my diamond ring to a moissanite. I love it, and my husband was fine with it because it made me happy :) I highly recommend Starsgem moissanite

Took my first vacation (1 week) in over a year to visit family. Was bombarded by emails from one partner asking me to complete non-time sensitive motions, which he hasn’t even bothered to review. This is my third firm in three years (first I left as I was severely underpaid, second I left for a 100k increase in salary), but this lack of respect for my boundaries has made me want to move again once I’ve completed 18 mos. Bad? They don’t do this to the other associates (all male).

Anyone else deal with others passing judgment because of your age? I’m 30, married, and carry myself in a professional manner but still deal with random comments related to my age. Today I was complimented for my “maturity” for how I responded to a problem and it was shared that a partner or two also commented on my maturity. It rubbed me the wrong way and although these comments are less frequent now than when I first started my career, I still hear them and it’s bothersome.

Advice needed! I started at an ID firm only a few months ago after a long stint doing in-house litigation. I was referred to the firm by a very good friend who also still works there. A management position at my old in-house firm has now been offered to me. Higher salary obviously and no billables.
