Make sure your book and LI profile are ready to go/up to date. Realize that no job is beneath you. I’ve seen lots of talented creatives blow it because of a primadonna attitude.
Save a nest egg to make the transition. Even if you get work right away, your cash flow will be different than FT and you don’t want to resort to credit cards.
Plus, even if you get a gig right away, you don’t get into the system that quickly. Unless the agency is super organized, you may not get a check for a pay period or two.
I got laid off July 2017 and have been freelance since. I find that connecting with recruiters has been better for me. WNW is good for them to find me, but jobs posted on there never work out for me. Use your professional network to let them know. I have a spreadsheet with recruiters names and last contacted date.
Whatever you do...even if you're bitter and hate them for laying you off...leave on good terms and let them know you're available for freelance. They may very well bring you in since you know the clients, account teams etc.
Other than that start gathering any/all work which you may need for your portfolio NOW. They will probably take your computer the moment they lay you off, and some places will not let you download your work, or will stand over you and watch what you take (personal stuff and campaigns that have already aired, etc).
And start building your network out immediately. Connecting with recruiters on LinkedIn, folks you know at other agencies, etc.
Great advice.
Start sending emails to ECDs that you are available and like their work. That’s all they need to know.
From your experience, is it better to reach out to recruiters or emailing ECDs regarding freelance gigs? Which has better odds? Do both?
Reach out to EVERYONE. You never know who knows about a gig. I’ve been freelancing steadily for years (turning down work, even). Above all, don’t be a jerk. I’ve seen less talented people get work over multi-award winners because they’re easier/nicer to work with.
