The truly silent majority
In NY, masks have been mandated for months, so I’d say we’re very used to them and compliance is high for the most part. It’s probably similar in most of the northeast. I haven’t travelled anywhere recently, but I’m curious to know how things are going in the southern states.
That’s really disappointing to hear. I’m in the suburbs, so I guess I can only speak for my area.

It’s a loud minority.

Have seen adoption increasing in Atlanta. Would note that not everyone is using mask correctly, i.e. having mask under nose or just hanging off chin to talk, so curious if those people might also self-report as wearing masks.

A very small minority of people don’t wear masks at this point. The only thing political about it is the media covering stories as if half the population shares the same views as that minority
This! The media enjoys fueling divisiveness. Very sad.
Adoption has been increasing in the south. Was quite low near me a few months ago but now is the majority of people

Depends on region. In DC, I'd estimate 75%+ mask use, with non mask wearers being primarily young (early 20s) and white

Isn’t it now illegal to go outside without a mask in DC?
I live in NYC, which is pretty high adoption. But everyone I know that’s either not in NYC or has traveled around to other places (save for some of the other major cities) say that wearing masks is not common.
Also, I’m sure more people are wearing them now. But it’s almost August and the US has been the epicenter of the pandemic for a couple months now, and it’s only just now ramping up. And at the same time, others are starting to get tired of it and are less diligent.
Self reported data on this, especially without geographical representation, is a waste of a data point.
Masks are required in stores and restaurants (when not at your table). However if people are out and about outside there may be mixed usage. I don’t wear one when I hike or I’m in the park. However I have it on me if the area gets too congested.

california, orange county resident here - lots of non-maskers, and if you look at states with spikes, that’s where they are.
I’m in OC as well (Irvine). Everyone in my community wears a mask in indoor public places that I can see. I hike a lot and people have them and put them on when passing others on the trail. I guess your experience can vary.
Rising Star
Midwest: extremely high mask adoption indoors, some adoption in outdoor congregations (restaurant patios etc), little to no adoption for outdoor recreation (walk, bike, run), no adoption for driving
In California they would be compliant then. Masks are NOT required when exercising outdoors unless you can’t be socially distant. And driving? Why would that require a mask?

I live in LA and even though most people wear them outdoors individually, I still also see large group gathers at parks and beaches where people meet new people and they’re not wearing masks and are shaking hands/hugging.
Shaking hands is still a thing?
Pro
Houston here. Most people are wearing them indoors at businesses now bc it’s mandated. Little to no adoption outdoors though.
I have only been to Houston twice, so help me understand why a mask outdoors would be necessary. It seemed like a city with plenty of space outdoors so being six feet apart would be easy.
