There’s a guy that lies about being an associate at big law. He was a contract lawyer. He brings up working as an associate in big law all the time in every conversation in social settings. Am an asshole if I call him out for it? He graduated years ago, so I don’t get why he lies.

Does anyone have advice for a baby lawyer who didn’t go to a rich PWI on fitting in to a corporate team made up of people who went to rich PWI? I’m friendly enough and we get along but I want to build deeper relationships but my coworkers seem to have trouble relating to me as I don’t drink wine and play squash/golf/tennis on the weekend.

Do any of you have experience with pushy coworkers? The kind who won't let you do anything without them "helping" even after you say "I've got this"? I can handle stocking the shelves by myself. So frustrating

While de-escalating a situation or dealing with a child having an outburst I tend to notice outside coworkers coming in my room to offer help or just check in. I find this doesn’t help it actually makes the situation worse. Would it be rude of me to send out an email asking them not to interrupt since it can make the situation work. I know most of the time it’s cause they are being nosy.

I feel like I’m seen as less of a contributor because I’m bad at thinking oh my feet during client meetings. Words just don’t come out of my mouth right

My previous manager would track us by hours daily, made a fuss everytime anything stretched and guilt us for that and the unplanned leave too unless it was COVID. Hinted him a lot of time, this is problematic but apparently he considered it "standard practice for agile".

Now 8/10 teammates have switched within < 1 year of project start (6-7 months with him) which tbh had good work in our opinion and even team was fun to work with even though none of us ever met in person.

What’s the consensus on tattoos in the insurance workplace? I’m in leadership and considering exploring my options due to recent personnel changes. I work remote and have arm sleeves, and any time I would be in-person I’d of course wear a long sleeve shirt to be professional, but worry about a cuff rolling up and tattoos being somewhat visible. Nothing is offensive by any means.

Received a job offer. Was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on a concern I had about it. It's an entry level position, and I don't have much experience. The billables are 2040 a year. For billable hours in civil litigation and insurance defense, is 2040 hours for a 1st year associate on the high end in this field for a small or midsize firm? It seems like most attorneys I know have minimum requirements of around 1800. The compensation is around 80k a year.

I don’t think I have enough saved (80-100k) to justify a financial advisor. But I also was never taught/learned about money management and planning. Are there any good resources or books in which I could learn about how to invest in my retirement?

I’m pretty sure colleagues at my firm are inflating their billable hours. Is this the norm? I suspect many of you will think this is obvious and/or that I’m naive but wtf? I find hitting 2200 is tough even with a good sized work load. Am I just expected to play the game? I don’t want to sound self-righteous but if most are lying just to make the requirement, then maybe the requirement should be lower.

How do I become a faster writer? People like my writing skills and I am now getting asked to write substantive appellate and responsive briefs. The issue is that I’m struggling to meet deadlines. It takes me twenty minutes to write a single sentence. I spend too much time fixated on revising prose sentence by sentence, instead of just moving on and revising later.

Are there elite boutiques out there where associates or junior partners are known to make more than biglaw? Seems like there’s so much $$$ going to the equity partners I’m surprised that there hasn’t been more competition on comp alone, not to mention culture and lifestyle.

Litigation associates— 4th to 6th years— is it billable to review emails? Obviously We have to review emails to know what is going on but sometimes there isn’t an obvious purpose for why we had to review it and sometimes there is no need to respond either. Asking 4th to 6th years because I have a feeling how billable some things are depends on how senior you are and the more senior you are the less billable certain things are. Enlighten me!!

Is it unwise to lateral to a firm where the compensation scale flattens out much more than at my current firm, just for a partial pivot in practice area? I think the pivot takes me closer to what I want to do and provides better exit opportunities, but I don’t want to regret the decision
