Wow. I’m sorry this happened. There are so many schools still looking for teachers.
So sorry for you. Don’t you love how it is always assumed we sped teachers can just move whenever??
Elementary is so much better. Reconsider your decision. God closes one door and opens another for a reason. Usually for your own good.
The good news is there’s so many openings you can probably find exactly what you want anywhere in the United States.
You will end up better off!
Similar situation happened to me four years ago. I was moved from the MS sp Ed position to HS. They moved my student teacher that they just hired for another position to my job. I loved my student teacher, but that still felt like a slap in the face. I was told I was the only person in the district with the certs to teach HS sp Ed. I was not happy to say the least. The only saving grace was that I got to work with some of my favorite students again.
I don't think people realize the wide range of special education teaching positions and additional duties and responsibilities in different programs. I have worked in special education for 2 districts in my area for the last 20 + years. I have worked in elementary Autism specific, and taught in High School Resource, High school and Middle School self contained Social Emotional Behavioral programs, and last year in a middle school self contained CBC classroom. Some of these positions required managing sometimes as many as 6 additional staffs duties, students schedules and additional support throughout their day, and yearly additional training for deescalation and restraint. This does not include the same responsibilities, although for a lot fewer students, as a general education teacher. Reasons for moving to different programs was always on my part and never the district moving me. The same as I think it should be for a general education teacher, due to the significant impact a special education teacher has on the staff, students and parents in the program, I feel it is most important for a special education teacher to want to be in that postion. Maybe the difference in my area is we have very strong union support. I am so sorry you are not able to stay in a teaching position you wanted to stay in. Good luck finding a district and position that is a right fit for you!
Taught special Ed. 29 out if 30 years. This always happens to us! Good for you- get a job where you are respected. If they are short a teacher- her fine little Fanny could sub in that position until they found a teacher! Here there are bonuses galore for special education teachers- even bonuses, more pay, for taking the sub position!
That happened to me once and I ended up with 3 schools that I absolutely loved going to all 3 schools.
Wow so sorry to hear that
Making a move from middle school to taking on k-5 position is a huge undertaking. My experience is mostly elementary, but one year I taught high school. I cried every day. Elementary is my niche. I’ve put a lot of time, money, and trainings to be the expert I need to be. If you’re niche is middle school, then I would stick with it. Don’t make yourself miserable.
Do you have a vocal parent or parents who could speak up?
I know how you feel. I hope you find another job that you love!
Hopefully you'll find what you're looking for.
